ARIA Award winners and Adelaide Roots favourites The Audreys recently released their new studio album Ruin and Repair, their first in ten years! Heading around the country to celebrate its release, last night, Perth was honoured to witness the first show of the tour. Tonight Freo gets in on the action!
Freo local, Finn Pearson and his band had the honour of warming up the crowd. Pearson is a seasoned performer in the WA music scene, having played different instruments across multiple bands over the years. He praised the audience for being a very nice crowd also noting that it feels unfamiliar. “It’s a bit awkward to have people listening so intently” He commented. “You are actually sitting and listening. It’s something I’m not used to. Usually there is someone fighting at the front” he laughed. I guess they were caught up in his storytelling and letting the folk rock sounds wash over them.

The Audreys current touring band members, Tom Kneebone (Guitars), Flik Freeman (Bass) and Beej Barker (Drums) quietly took to the stage and performed a welcome to country before welcoming leading lady, Taasha Coates. Taasha appeared looking like she had just stepped out of an 80’s videoclip, wearing a tight, sparkly dress and armed with a melodica. The band opened with an acoustic version Banjo and Violin – Sans banjo violin, but “You get the gist right?” Taasha laughed. Speaking of 80’s videos- Even the fan blowing on the bands faces gave some serious hairography, which added to the moodiness of Secondhand Boots. Unfortunately, this was put to a swift end after the second song. “It’s blowing hair into my mouth and I don’t love it” groaned Taasha.
The 16 song set was curated nicely, with an even mix of the old and new songs. Although, Taasha did object to having I Remember Everything and Subterranean back to back, as she finds these songs particularly challenging. “Who’s idea was it to put these two together!?’ Taasha protested while Tom took his time tuning the banjo. “This is just them delaying the inevitable!” Laughed Flik.
The band had great chemistry, shown through many humorous moments and quips throughout the show. While they may primarily be musicians, they could definitely double as comedians! Taasha admits that a lot of her lyrical themes revolve around sex and death, which Tom so accurately noted that “It’s like the MONA museum of songwriting!”.

There were a couple of live polls throughout the night. One being “Is the next song a Taasha death song? Or a Taasha sex song?”. The sex songs were the ones that got the crowd grooving. It was the highly emotional songs got Taasha moving. During songs such as Sober and Small Things, Taasha would release energy through her hands, using subtle movements to express the song.
Before performing Beatles vs Stones, the second live poll of the night was conducted. Taasha was overjoyed that The Stones took the win. “This is a new song, we’ve just put a video out for it. Who’s seen it?” The lack of response from the crowd greatly disappointed Taasha “Right! Everyone get you phones out, we’ll watch it on YouTube before playing the song!” She jested.
The fact that tonights attendees were an older crowd made was made glaringly obvious by the lack of phones that were out; People were visibly living in the moment and attentive, a fact that Finn had pointed out earlier in the night. Everyone seemed to be enjoying watching the band switch it up and give new life to the songs. Whether this be stripped back acoustic arrangements, changing up the instruments used or playing things in different ways. Such as Taasha using a guitar pick “For the first time ever!”. Taasha was certainly having fun with it. “I messed up the words because I was so excited about the pick.” She admitted after performing You and Steve McQueen. “It’s fun I feel like it might go flying at any point!” She said with flicking motion.
If you’ve never seen The Audreys live, give them a go when they are next in your area. They are certainly well worth the price of admission as you get a two for one: A night of good music and a comedy show!
