The Avalanches by grantspanier_pola

Summer festivals are as much a part of Australian culture as test cricket and meat pies.  There’s nothing quite like seeing your favourite bands in blistering 40-degree heat while throwing back a warm mid-strength beer.  As the live music industry continues to be ravaged by the pandemic, the crew at Secret Sounds have blessed Australian music fans with the Summer Sounds Festival.  Pulling together some of the nation’s finest acts for a run of shows across the country.  Brisbane was lucky enough to score back-to-back shows at the Riverstage with The Avalanches headlining the Friday night.

Supporting The Avalanches tonight is local electronic act, The Kite String Tangle.  The man behind the project, Danny Harley delivered an engaging set from behind the keys/synths with a live drummer by his side.  We were also lucky enough to be the first crowd to get a taste of an unannounced project Danny has been working on with Melbourne artist, Woodes, called Tornado Club. Ending his set with an epic remix of Fatboy Slim’s Praise You, there’s something incredibly fitting about the lyrics “We’ve come a long, long way together.  Through the hard times and the good.  I have to celebrate you, baby.  I have to praise you like I should”.

The Avalanches line-up has been a bit of a rotating roster, changing a lot over the years.  Now consisting of just Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi, the pair hug before kicking off their set with The Divine Chord from their latest album We Will Always Love You.  The record features a smorgasbord of guest vocalists and musicians including Denzel Curry, Tricky and Johnny Marr.

I stop and savour the magical moment when it starts to drizzle during the intro to Interstellar Love, losing myself in the sweet soulful sounds of Leon Bridges’ vocals and the feeling of being in a crowd of people….AT A CONCERT!!  It is a feeling I hadn’t felt in a long time.

During their set, there are moments where the duo loses the crowd in their extended remixes, but like only The Avalanches can, they draw us back in with the perfect sample – throwing in a little Willy Wonka, Beach Boys or Queen to kick the party off again.

The perfect trio of Running Redlight, Because I’m Me and Since I Left You ends the night on a high, but I’m somehow left wanting more.   After seeing The Avalanches support The Chemical Brothers back in 2019 with a DJ set, I guess I was expecting more from tonight’s show.  I had hopes for the full band Avalanches experience, but alas, I will take what I can get in these trying times.  Even if it means an obviously absent Frontier Psychiatrist.
