The Dead Daisies

.

The Dead Daises are back with their sixth album release “Radiance” and if you were in any doubt about the state of rock, just know that this album proves its heart is still beating like a drum. The group’s lineup reads like an all-star dream team of rock players featuring guitarists David Lowy from Red Phoenix and Doug Aldrich from Whitesnake and Dio, singer Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple and the return of drummer Brian Tichy formerly of Whitesnake and Foreigner.

“Radiance” is their sixth album and the new offering is filled with songs that full-heartedly embrace the sound of classic heavy rock. The songwriting and production is finely finessed showing the depth of talent and experience The Dead Daisies bring to the table. It’s near impossible not to like this album which brings forth the best, and most accessible, aspects of rock to create forty-plus minutes of harmonic rock.

.

.

Face your Fear

The opener “Face your Fear” oozes confidence and an assured rock ego. With a band consisting of players from some of rock’s most legendary bands, you’d expect nothing less. A relaxed rhythm forms the foundation featuring the guitar’s heavy and dirty riffs and Glenn Hughes’ voice is a perfect example of a warm deep rock vocal we rarely hear these days. Like taking a match to a pile of kindling fire “Face Your Fear” gets the album off to a fiery start.

Hypnotize Yourself

The Dead Daisies delve into melodic deep grooves with “Hypnotize Yourself”. Featuring a subdued intro that opens up to a blazing chorus of thrashing guitars and drums that feels like a hit to the guts. It’s infectious and hooks you in from the first riff to have you headbanging before the end of the song. For those who still crave classic hard in a world of overproduced music, this track will be exactly what they need. With its sultry moodiness and burly aggression, “Hypnotize Yourself” is a winner.

Shine On

There are elements of Motley Crue and Dio radiating from “Shine On” a song which is intent on pumping you up. “There is no time. Shine On. High we climb. Shine On” sings Hughes like a pastor at the pulpit. Furious chords are later buffeted by a shredding guitar solo working together like a well-oiled machine. The Dead Daises sound incredibly polished in part due to the grand efforts of their producer and mixer Ben Grosse so even those unfamiliar with hard rock will still fall for the earworm track.

.

.

Radiance

The title track encompasses many of the themes this album conveys such as rising above and ultimately backing yourself. Beginning with a dirty guitar riff, Hughes has some fun here with his teasing vocal that seductively invites you in. However, the other players are also finely matched together. Doug Aldrich on (lead guitar) and David Lowy (guitar) take their time giving “Radiance” a layered soundscape that feels so satisfying to hear. It’s big, bold and brash but more than shows off the writing skills of the group.

Born To Fly

Beginning with thumping drums “Born To Fly” soars with an inspirational intro of majestic drums and a substantial riff before Glenn’s resonant voice comes in. The Dead Daisies have mastered the ability to craft rock songs that retain their grittiness whilst being incredibly accessible and hooky. It’s not exactly setting new boundaries but that’s not the point. “Born To Fly” is a great example of that, it’s good music that anyone can listen to and more importantly sounds like the band is having too much fun.

Kiss The Sun

In Kiss The Sun, The Dead Daisies are giving us a little Soundgarden with a little Rob Zombie. Utilising a vocoder this time around the song grinds with a guttural rumble that creating a moodiness to the song. Again Glenn’s voice provides enough light and shade to give the song dimension amidst the driving rhythms that propel the momentum along. Dealing with issues of struggling to rise above the challenges that we face in “Kiss The Sun” The Dead Daisies quietly dial up the intensity keeping the tension so tight you realise you’ve been holding your breath all this time.

.

.

Courageous

Radiance is an album about maintaining the power to fight that much is clear. Given The Dead Daisies are comprised of members who have gone through their triumphs and troubles it’s incredible to hear messages of positivity radiating off an album whose music has often been maligned for inciting our darker selves. “Courageous” is a song that exudes confidence as Glenn sings “You’ve got to believe, it’s courageous” and “Come On, Come On” like he’s pulling us up by the scruff of our shirt to knock some sense into us.

Cascade

Things get dirty again with the ballsy “Cascade”. A powerful track with gutsy guitar riffs that sound like a calling out to those who love rock. It swings like a pendulum between deep sonic soundscapes to a hard rocking chorus that would get a few necks out of joint with the windmilling it elicits. The Dead Daisies with producer Ben Grosse squeeze every sonic element out of Cascade and the result is a track that leaves you satisfied.

.

.

Not Human

Heading into the home straight, The Dead Daisies deliver another cracking song demonstrating once again how well all the members work together to create a driving rock that rattles your bones. “Not Human” features a wild guitar solo and addresses when past mistakes rise up threatening to affect who we are today.

Roll On

The Dead Daisies take the smart step in bringing us back down to Earth with “Roll On”. Like taking your first breath in over forty minutes, “Roll On” is like breaking the water’s surface after a deep dive. The group bring in an acoustic guitar, pianos and strings to create a full rock orchestral sound which accompanies what is essentially an alt-rock melody to create “I live on the inside, in a promised land. Roll On”.

.

The Dead Daisies.

It’s a solid sentiment to close off an album that is an exercise in empowering yourself and acknowledging where you’ve been to be able to move forward. Who’d have thought a group of hard rockers could convey music which not only beats with unbridled energy but also contemplative introspection?

“The new album ‘RADIANCE’ is our 2nd album with Ben Grosse producing from top to bottom. We had a great time composing and recording the record and I’m very excited for you all to hear what we put together. Definitely a heavy album but with some cool twists and turns! Hope you all like it.” – Doug Aldrich

‘RADIANCE’ is the second instalment The Daisies have recorded with esteemed producer Ben Grosse at the helm, recorded at The Mix Room in North Hollywood California.

All the songs on ‘RADIANCE’ are written by David Lowy, Doug Aldrich and Glenn Hughes. Hard-hitting drummer Brian Tichy returned to The Daisies in early 2022 to lay down the drums on ‘RADIANCE’.

“I am very much looking forward to the release of ‘RADIANCE’, the newest LP from The Dead Daisies! It was great to start off being back in the band by getting together with Doug, Glenn, David, and producer Ben Grosse at his studio dialling in the songs that make up ‘RADIANCE’. It was a very smooth, organized process of jamming with the guys getting all drum grooves and parts just right!”
