The Hard Aches are the definition of a good old Aussie grunge band. Their live performance at The Crowbar had every element a good punk rock show needed, angsty lyrics, some hectic drumming and as much sound two blokes can possibly make.

The night opened with 4 piece Aussie rock band, The Cutaways who did a perfect job at getting the crowd up and moving, drawing the keenest from the crowd to start a small mosh. They rocked the house and set the tone for the rest of the evening. The second band to open for The Hard Aches was Sweater Curse, an unearthed Brisbane band who seamlessly took over the stage, bringing a different vibe as lead singer MONICA SOTTILE, enchanted the crowd with her deep melodic voice.

Finally, the time came for The Hard Aches to rock the Crowbar, opening with their most popular single, “MESS”. This undoubtedly got the crowd warmed up fairly quickly, with a chorus of voices singing along with lead singer Ben David, and many heads banging along to the talented drumming of Alex Upton. After this, other favourites were played such asGET OUTA MY HOUSE” and “WARM BLOODED” which went off. At this point in the night, the crowd was sharing more than just a love for punk rock, they were sharing sweat and adrenaline.  Bens vocals were strong, intense and full of emotion which also describes the signature Hard Aches lyrics. The small crowd in the Crowbar made for an intimate and genuine connection between not only the band and the audience but the people in the audience, proving the effect their music has on the masses. After a few more angsty ballads about the life of a young adult, the boys then invited their “friend Millie” up to the stage to feature in their track “HAPPY” which proved to be the fans favourite as everyone sung every lyric and also attempted to harmonize (note the use of ‘attempted’). Although Millie was there replacing Georgia Maq (CAMP COPE singer) who records the original version on the record, she truly held her own and put on a stunning performance who also had brilliant chemistry with the band and audience alike. Other songs from their new album “MESS” which brought the house down include “OUTLINE” and “FAMILY”. The final song “GLAD THAT YOUR GONE” was the perfect ending to this perfect performance. By this time the crowd had jumped and danced so much, they would’ve burnt off a weeks’ worth of carbs.

It’s not always easy to play to a smaller audience and get everyone as involved and excited as these guys did but they absolutely exceeded my expectations and gave the Crowbar a very rock n roll 6th birthday present. If you are into bands like Modern Baseball, The Smith Street Band, and Camp Cope I would highly recommend you listen to their new album Mess. Even if you’ve never heard of these guys before I would still urge you to just grab a ticket on their Australian tour for a good night of wholesome music and headbanging.
