These New South Whales are back in their home state New South Wales. You may know them from their self titled comedy series on the Comedy Central or their signature outfits on stage of black pants and black tape across their nipples or their self proclaimed title ‘Premier Punk Outfit’. If any of these ring a bell, then your’e in luck because These New South Whales are currently on their headline tour No Bridge Left To Burn. Their second stop on tour was the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney. These New South Whales brought along friends that were all different genres, it was like a variety show. Their supports include Greenwave Beth, Rebel Yell and Party Dozen.

First up was Greenwave Beth, usually a two piece but today, it was just Charles. “This is all coming from a deep rage inside of me” says Charlesas we are about to kick straight in it. His unusual quirky style just put a smile on my face. Sounds of 80’s synth wave filled the room. Dancing around the stage and even taking his dance moves to the floor, he was full of energy. Lyrically, his songs may need some work but all in all, he is an artist that’s quite interesting to watch.

Then it was time for a dance party with DJ Rebel Yell. Lights went down and we were immersed in her electro/dance beats. You could feel the bass rumble in your chest. Some of the crowd were into it, dancing around like they were at a rave. While others were not so into it. I guess, it was  hit and miss. Her underground, industrial tracks were crafted nicely, having the tracks continuing turning.

Our last support act was Party Dozen. Drums, Sax and loop board is all you need for this two piece band. Together they create this mix of jazz, punk and electric synth beats. It was a party with dozens of beats and sounds, each song they performed was like they were trying to one- up each other. Just like when Jazz bands perform, one takes over then the other. It was exhilarating to watch.

As the curtain reopens, it was time for These New South Whales. Their front man, Jamie was the only one on stage. He gave a speech before getting things on the road about telling what has been happening over the past few months. “I have a new skin care routine…. I feel the best I have ever been” says Jamie with a deep voice effect. As the rest of the band walk on stage in their signature outfits of black pants and tape across their nipples except their front man. It was time to unleash the punk. Opening up with their song Ceremony’. “This is your Ceremony” sings Jamie with a child like voice effect. Their energy was high with signs of not slowing down.

Heading into their song ‘We Don’t Need You Anymore’. The crowd was chanting the chorus me included “We don’t need you anymore, we don’t, we don’t, we don’t, we don’t need your energy”. Down right at the front a little mosh began. Jumping up and down, bashing into each other.

We were lucky enough to hear their B-side track ‘It’s Christmas’. That’s right a Christmas song, who would ever thought, that they would release a Christmas song. It was true to their sound – punk, punk, punk.

Continuing with going heavy or go home, they played their political song Police State. The catchy lyrics and killer drums made the crowd go wild. As the song slows down into a seductive tone. Jamie takes off his jacket to reveal his signature outfit. He sexy dances around to face front of the audience – body rolls and all.

“We don’t do encores. If one of you say encore, I’m going to be so annoyed” he says, as they conclude their final song.

The crowd clap and cheers, waiting for an encore. Even though they say they don’t do encores. Pelvis, the bands manager from their self titled TV series walks out on stage. In his blue Elvis outfit. “Encore, Encore..” says Pelvis. The crowd joins in. Soon enough These New South Whales return.

“This is so embarrassing, we don’t usually do encores” says Jamie. We didn’t just get one encore, we got three songs including ‘Adam’ and hit singleCholesterol Heart (God Bless Ya)’.

Pelvis stayed on stage and boogied along – they definitely made it count. Overall, it was a good night out with a variety of support artists and a killer punk set from These New South Whales. Who perform so well together.
