Five years since their last album “America”, Thirty Seconds to Mars show they’re still in the scene with new album “It’s The End Of The World But It’s a Beautiful Day”. Surprisingly Jared still has his foot in the music camp, despite his busy acting career. As veterans within the alternative rock scene, there are high hopes and expectations especially after such a long absence. Upon first listen, this seems to be fulfilled.

First track “Stuck” is slick, stylish, sensual, it is like walking into an underground nightclub, red lights pulsating over a ridiculously attractive crowd. From heavenly soft vocals, it quickly descends into fat electronic beats and a plodding bass line. Follow up track “Life Is Beautiful” keeps the intensity strong with magnificent thunderclaps and beat drops, very Imagine Dragons. The next few tracks pull back a bit in mood, dipping into a dreamy realm of 2000’s pop with simple percussion and raspy vocals.

Jared Leto has a powerful upper range, however it isn’t until late track “Never Not Love You” that we hear a whisper of this. Gone are the emotional, passionate, raw, rumbling choruses, that made the brothers emo staples in “This Is War”. Their latest album is in comparison subdued.  Created by over production or deliberate music restraint? This album does however have all the characteristics for commercial success, and most importantly the potential to sound amazing live.

We know the Leto brothers are natural performers, incorporating costume, attitude and music to put on a show. Tracks such as “World On Fire” with clapping drums, are a blue print for encouraging hand claps in real life. “Seasons” with its’ relaxed hip hop beats is made for swaying a lit up phone in the air to. These tracks were written to create stadium stamping hand clap moments which would be a spectacle live, but the magic doesn’t hit as hard through the stereo.

Finishing track “Avalanche” is the album’s saving grace. A resemblance to the dramatic, emotionally anguished lyrical early days.

“It’s The End Of The World But It’s a Beautiful Day” is a pleasing, easy listen that is radio friendly. It does take a few listens before you can get invested enough to separate out some highlight tracks. Take your time, listen, go away, then come back to it. Only time will tell after some live shows if this will be their wildcard.
