This debut release by Melbourne musician Timechyld is guaranteed to make you sit up and take notice. It’s a fresh interpretation of some old school 70s and 80s sounds, delivered with unwavering power and real heart and soul. Timechyld has been exploring music since his early teenage years, demoing in his bedroom. And now the fruits of his labour are on show here.
Love Bank is an irresistible dance-rock funk inspired pop banger beautifully produced and performed with charm, conviction and alluring expression. Beginning with a thundering Rick James like bass riff, it doesn’t take long until the song takes off, complete with clean guitar funk jabs and mesmerising beats.
The arrangement is the pop song standard but the treatment is anything but. Timechyld swoons in the verses until the pre-chorus arrives to make way for the lush and pulsating chorus. There are hooks aplenty here, with the chorus the obvious standout. The second verse has a few varying textures and some surprise breaks and pauses which all help the second pre and chorus lift to those feel-good heights. Then there’s another surprise when swathes of wailing Hendrix guitar glides across the incessant bass riff and thick driving drum feel.
The solo break is well-timed and just the right length allowing for the last chorus to do its thing. Timechyld’s doesn’t go for any over the top vocal theatrics which is welcome, it sits in a sweet spot that invokes a certain level of tongue in cheek attitude while maintaining enough skill to pull off this retro new-wave funk homage. Sure it’s going to attract the Prince comparisons but it’s worthwhile to note that there are some reverberations of James Brown and the work of other soul music pioneers in there also.
This is a masterful debut and worthy of some across the board airplay and a lot of streaming attention. It’s also a no brainer for the clubs. Love Bank is sure to be the first step in establishing Timechyld’s musical future.
