Inhibition is everything classic rock fans could ever want, plus a modern taste on the side; for such a young band, Zenith Moon has crafted a particularly exciting debut in Inhibition. With influences such as Led Zepplin and Baby Animals, everything about the track is massive, from the face-melting guitar to the bold, empowering vocals from lead singer Kahli Rose.
The inspiration behind Inhibition came from a very personal place, as Kahli explains,
“Inhibition is a song I wrote after I finished year 12. My high school experience was rather tough and negative as I had to deal with racism and bullying, which led me to depression and extreme anxiety…I became so afraid to be myself that I stopped doing all the things I love which included writing and performing music. In year 12 I decided that I was going to stop letting my depression and anxiety take control. This song is about the journey I went through to become a confident woman and not being swayed by other people’s opinions.”

Janis Joplin:
When I heard ‘Piece of My Heart’ for the first time, I was truly amazed. She had such a coarse, guttural and strong voice, and is known for being one of the best female vocalists of all time. When I was younger, I would go onto youtube and watch videos of her performance to see how she not only connected with the song herself but how she connected to the audience. I always wanted to be a performer who did exactly that. I was and still am completely bewildered about how Joplin could sing with such pure and true emotion. It honestly did sound like she was singing the ‘blues’.

Aretha Franklin
Who doesn’t love Aretha Franklin? You can hear she poured her heart and soul into every song she sings, hence why she is known as the ‘Queen of Soul’. It’s hard to understand how she sings with such effortlessness since she has an incredibly powerful voice. With songs like ‘Chain of Fools’ and ‘Respect’, I loved how she would sing them with such a great amount of sassiness and attitude- something I like to ensure I do in our tunes.

Chrissy Amphlett
I think Chrissy Amphlett is one of the coolest Australian rock chicks that has ever been around. What I love about Amphlett is that she had such a great image. She was the epitome of sex appeal, with her performing in fishnet stockings and a schoolgirl uniform. Their single ‘I touch myself’ actually inspired another song we perform, as it’s quite sexual, however, it’s delivered in a more discrete way. If I come across as being confident like her, then I must be doing something right.

Amy Winehouse
I truly believe Amy Winehouse was one of the best songwriters and performers of the 21st century. Her voice was so different from other pop artists, it was raw, as it embodied old school jazz and soul. Yes, she was a jazz singer, however, she turned jazz into pop music in the early-mid 2000’s. Normally female ‘pop’ stars are cast as being sweet and happy, but with Winehouse’s image as well as her songs, she is the complete opposite, with her tunes being about sex, drinking or drug abuse.

Nina Simone
I personally believe Nina sung the most empowering, passionate and liberating songs. Not only that, but she is also an incredible storyteller. Whenever I listen to songs like ‘I put a spell on you’ or ‘Feeling good’, I can’t help but feel as though I have been hypnotized- I am completely absorbed in the song and lose track of time and space. I love how I feel like I’m going through the journey with her.
