Venus Fly Trap have been enticing fans on the East Coast with their unique blend of surf rock. They may garner a few more with their latest offering Gone. A song that explores the topsy-turvy journey of loss and reminds us that we are not alone. It’s a song that is bold in its scale, edged with a grittiness that hooks you in.
Venus Fly Trap is an emerging band from the picturesque coastal town of Byron Bay. Their music showcases a distinct blend of grunge, surf rock, blues, and hard rock. Led by frontman Tim Degen on vocals and guitar, Matt De Wit grounds everything on bass and Andy Wilkinson thunders away on drums. Their latest single, Gone, highlights their strong musicianship and unique genre fusion.
The song starts brusquely, skimming along like a stone across a pond as Degen sings with honesty about feeling adrift in the world because of suffering a devastating loss. This part could best be described as bluesy surf-rock but then that all changes when Gone shifts gears to dive deep into emotional loss with the arrangement delivering intense gritty guitars, dark basslines and foreboding drums. Conveying the emotional back and forth of loss, anger and acceptance Gone strives to speak with raw frankness.
By doing this they show off their creative chops, not only in production but in being able to write a song of varying parts that still sounds seamlessly cohesive as a whole. It’s like if you took the moody anxiety of Radiohead’s early work and Pearl Jam’s emotional brevity with the soulful melodies of Ocean Alley you’ll land quite close to what Gone is.
Venus Fly Trap have delivered a song that shows off their distinctive approach and creative direction. Those who vibe with music that challenges notions of the traditional rock song will find this a real treat.
