There is a special feeling that I as a writer and a musician I get when I go to shows, but even more so when it’s a young up and coming band headlining their own show. On the bill for tonight at a small little venue in the heart of Brisbane by the name of the Crowbar was Melbourne local boys Void Of Vision. Along side them was another up and coming band from Taree by the name of Diamond Construct and the Brisbane locals UNI/VS.
Both openers suited the vibe of the show and audience really well, bringing with them their own unique style of hardcore that really got the crowd warmed up. Both bands had a very tricky task ahead of them, get the crowd pumping in the stinking hot Crowbar for the headliner to play to. Neither band disappointed, with both UNI/VS and Diamond Construct pulling a pumping crowd reaction with lots of chaos to be seen from the pit.
The venue I feel was picked perfectly for this gig as it’s a smaller venue but when it gets full it looks like there is thousands of people in there. This would be a massive confidence booster for each of the bands playing on stage. One thing that impresses me every time I go to the Crowbar is how good the sound reverberates in that venue, the mix was pulled to perfection with every element of what was happening on stage been heard by everyone. This is where I have to give props to the people behind the sound desks, this is not an easy feat to pull off but they pull it off to pure perfection.
After the support acts departed from the stage the mood changed in the place. Everyone was hot and sweaty but unlike the gap between the two support acts, not many people moved as they wanted the best spot to see the headliner. With the house music getting louder and louder in the lead to Void Of Vision taking the stage, the crowd was singing along to tracks from Wolfmother and The Goo Goo Dolls, we all knew the time was near.

The moment Void Of Vision took the stage and burst into arguably the most popular track from the new record ‘Year of the Rat’, the crowd was throwing hands and bouncing in excitement. This energy did not go anywhere for the entire set with their fair share of circle pits, walls of death and pure pit madness, and this energy did not go without gratitude with the band thanking the crowd after almost every song. It was fun to watch how crazy it got in such a small place.
One thing that I loved about their set is that even though I have not had a lot to do with the band in the past and don’t know a great deal of their music, their set was enjoyable from start to finish. The depth of the tracks they played was appreciated by every hardcore fan in the building, playing tracks from each one of their releases, with an obvious lean towards their latest record ‘Hyperdaze’.
One thing I thought was extremely effective was that they played their first 9 or so tracks from the new record and then the rest of the set was older music, capping the night off with their biggest track to date ‘Ghost in the Machine’.

The band never for one second lost any energy, from the very beginning I knew that it was going to be a killer show to see. Having never seen the band in the past I wasn’t to sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by how good they were. This band is incredible and should be checked out by anyone who loves the genre. I would go as far as to say this gig deserves a 9/10, supports were perfect for the gig, venue was perfect, headline was incredible. Great stuff!
