Selling out just an hour before the show, the heavyweight line-up that made up Void of Vision’s Das Ende Australian Tour proved to be too good for the Adelaide punters to resist.
As the attendees piled in, they were greeted by atmospheric lights, bathing the stage in a sea of red. For a metalcore show, there was an abnormal amount of latex, chains and leather- but that is too be expected because Void of Vision defies the conventions of what makes up modern metalcore. Enough about the room though, let’s get into the show.
Gracing the stage first was Greyscale Records newest signing, Annalynn, all the way from Thailand. Though they have been ripping through Asia for a while now, it was the first time the band has made their way down under. Judging from the set the pulled off, it will not be their last. Urging what started as a sparse crowd to move forward, as soon as the band ripped into their opener Closer to the Edge, curiosity got the better of those trying to conserve their energy for the later acts. Frontman Bon was engaging and charismatic, showing off the colloquiums that he had learnt in his brief time here.
After proclaiming that they were “not here to f*** spiders”, the band smashed out a set of brutal and fun metalcore masterpieces. Their latest single ‘Disappear’ was somewhat known and by the time they played the track Leveling God, the crowd was well and truly sold.
Warming up the room nicely, it was the stage was US band Varials for the taking. Despite missing their vocalist Mitchell Rogers, who was unfortunately in a van accident in July, the set was in good hands with fill-in frontman Eddie Knight. Fast, furious and commanding- the pit did not take much coaxing to get moving. You could hardly believe it was winter because that band room was quickly becoming a sauna. By their second song, you could barely find a room to stand as it started to pack out.
Varials reached across their catalogue for this one, treating an audience who had been waiting a hot minute to get down to a band like this. Breakdown after breakdown, the crowd was hungry for more. The break between Varials set and Like Moths to Flames felt like an eternity. The momentum had started and nobody wanted to slow down.
Like Moths to Flames was an obvious draw. While all the bands were getting love from this sold-out audience, there seemed to be a special love for the Ohio metalcore masters. The energy was crazy out the gate, with the band bursting into their set with ‘Ameliorate’. Frontman Chris Roetter was unrelenting with the Adelaide crowd and the energy become cyclical. Hearing all the latest songs live for the first time was a highlight but you can never deny how hard the OG tracks go.
Ultimately, it was an absolute wild set and while the crowd had love for Like Moths to Flames, it seemed the feeling was mutual with the band showing their love for the Adelaide crowd on social media straight after.
As impressive as the night had been so far, as the stage was getting set for our headliners, it felt like it had only just begun. The lights went dark and as the crowd chanted for them, slowly the band was revealed. With his face covered with a black, spiked balaclava- singer Jack Bergin led the leather cladded charge into their opener ‘Berghain’.
Like an enchantment, immediately the venue was transfixed and under the spell of this charismatic frontman. As the seeped into ‘Dominatrix’ it felt like being part of a ritual. The lightshow, the music and ultimately, the power this band had over the audience it felt that with a flick of the wrist, we were under a spell.Costume changes were made, but it felt seamless. The breaks between tracks were moments of reprieve allowing the crowd to catch their breath, to full absorb the show they were now a part of. We were witnessing the Chronicles of Void of Vision and while the show was so complete, it felt like we were witnessing a metamorphosis.
Void of Vision admitted just that. Before they finished the show with their new single ‘Angel of Darkness’, it was proclaimed that a new era of the band was beginning.
Rightfully so as well. While the setting felt intimate and clublike, it felt too small. A band with this much presence and power should be on massive stages. There is just something so special about this band. They certainly have the talent to be there and there is no doubt in my mind, they will be there very soon.
