‘They love the Fall but hate the Rise
Enough to keep their Dark Sunrise’
This week a song from over 30 years ago by evocative songstress and performer Kate Bush re-entered the ARIA chart to land her first number one with “Running Up That Hill (Deal With God)”. For those who have recently discovered the unique English artist, they should also cast their attention over to Australian artist Yolette Stewart and her new single “Dark Sunrise” which exudes similar moody, atmospheric and deeply reflective themes.
Having released her debut single “Ephiphany” last year, the Melbourne composer, songwriter and singer returns with “Dark Sunrise” which continues her exploration of spirituality and identity through a hybrid of shimmery contemporary folk with a Celtic edge. In Yolette’s words, she describes the premise of “Dark Sunrise” coming from the idea that “a sunrise, which is usually a symbol of hope and freshness, can become ‘dark’ where there is no hope and only cynicism.” Specifically, she’s exploring the idea of being trapped in mundane cycles which hinder our ability to be bold and fearless.
The structure of the song is like a sea shanty but with the inclusion of choral sung verses and otherworldly vocals, “Dark Sunrise” comes through more like a siren’s song. Given Yolette’s background in musical theatre and choral music, you’d expect a little theatrical flourish to bloom from her music. As Yolette muses over how to keep positive in uncertain times, it’s her voice which stands out the most with the song featuring a simple melody on keyboards and an unhurried drum rhythm that creates a rich and layered song, with the track being mixed by Dave Claxton.
Drawing inspiration not only from her musical experience but also from her experiences living in greater Victoria, Yolette shows that she can confidently control the elements of her music to create complex alluring sonic landscapes.
“Dark Sunrise” will be released on Friday 24th of June which shows that Australia has some very eclectic songwriters who are willing to push against the norm.
