Sydney pop-punk band Yours Truly have had a whirlwind year; being nominated for Best International Breakthrough band at the Heavy Music Awards, playing festivals such as Unify Gathering, Burn it Down, Full Tilt, Great Escape and Slam Dunk, touring with big names such as Against the Current, I Prevail and Pierce the Veil,  headlining in the UK, releasing their 4th EP ‘is this what I look like?’ and ending the year off by playing some special release shows back home in Australia. The Fremantle show at Mojo’s Bar was one of many sold out shows, so it was set to be a big night.

Opening the night, were local indie-punk band Sixth Avenue. Right off the bat, these guys brought the energy; headbanging and moving around the entire stage. They played a mixture of their newer tracks, and some older ones, so the crowd could get a feel of their sound. The band took a moment to give some love to the venue and the staff, noting that they played their first ever show at Mojo’s, before getting back into the swing of things, getting the crowd warmed up.

Next up was indie-pop artist, Yen Strange. She stood alone on stage, but she didn’t need a band to captivate the audience; her presence alone was mesmerising – pair that with her smooth vocals and catchy lyrics, and I was hooked. She opened her set with Donnie Darko, then went into an unreleased song. During a talk break, she mentioned that the last time she was in Perth, she opened for Eliza and the Delusionals.

“Was anyone there?”
There was a deafening silence in the room.
“Oh, no one? Weird!”

She then played two covers – the first being Mallrat’s ‘Intro’, which was dreamy, and the second was a mashup of We Found Love by Rihanna and I Miss You by blink-182. I never thought those two songs would ever be put together, let alone sound good together.

The third support act of the night was self-proclaimed ‘Heavy Metal Boyband’, Banks Arcade. I knew of this band before the night, but hadn’t had the chance to see them live yet. After seeing them live, they’ve earnt themselves a fan. They burst onto the stage with an immense amount of energy, ready to put on a show. Bassist Harlan Allen-Jones was sporting a pair of sunglasses, how they stayed on for so long is beyond me, with the amount of headbanging he did. The band’s set consisted of songs from their most recent release; their album Future Lovers, and older songs from their two EPs. When talking about playing the song Spark, off the aforementioned album, vocalist Joshua O’Donnell spoke about how the song was about getting through tough times, and let the audience know that the band believed in them. Phone torches lit up the room as the crowd united as one. After the emotional part of the set was done, the band (and audience) got right back to moshing. O’Donnell was hanging from the ceiling of the venue, joining in on mosh pits, and encouraging the crowd to go as hard as they were. By the time Banks Arcade were finished, the crowd were definitely energised and ready for the main act!

Yours Truly walked onto stage to an enormous cheer. It was their first headline show in Perth so their hardcore fans had been waiting a long time to hear them play a longer set. They hadn’t played a show here at all since 2019 since before their album ‘Self Care’ came out, so singer Mikaila Delgado announced that it would be getting its moment as well as brand new EP ‘is this what I look like?’. As soon as they started their first song, the crowd was singing back every word. During a moment of pause during a slight wardrobe malfunction, Delgado and guitarist Teddie Winder-Haron shared some on-stage banter about cricket (or Mikaila’s lack of knowledge of cricket), and how Perth is spelt/pronounced ‘Perf’ when they’re here.
The band played a variety of songs from their discography, for old and new fans alike. Before playing the title track for the EP, Delgado explained that it was written during the hard times of COVID lockdown, and it was about struggling to figure out who you are, but she reassured fans that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Yours Truly are one of the most interactive live bands I’ve seen; performing to crowd members’ phones’, giving out high fives and fist bumps (even when they already gave 10 to the same person), joining mosh pits with the crowd, and getting them involved in almost every song with clapping and singalongs.

I definitely recommend getting along to one of their live shows, and giving their new EP ‘is this what I look like?’ a listen if you’re a fan of modern pop-rock.
