For the first time ever in Australia, iconic Russian punk rock performance art collective Pussy Riot will perform one epic concert on the RCC Main Stage in an exclusive collaboration with Australian artists.
Four key members of the world’s best-known activist group – Masha, Sasha, Nastya and Kot, will reunite on stage for this one off concert at RCC Fringe at the University of Adelaide, alongside Yothu Yindi, Ecca Vandal and MC’d by wild anti-consumerist gospel shouter, Reverend Billy who will be joined on stage by The Stop Shopping Choir to complete the line up.
These politically powered artists showcase a variety of styles, resulting in a musical fusion of social and cultural activism, with music playing its vital and ongoing role in speaking truth to power.
“The RCC Pussy Riot takeover comes to an epic conclusion with this landmark, once-in-a-lifetime show. After a week of their powerhouse performance, Riot Days, Pussy Riot Live brings together the explosive and charismatic Ecca Vandal, and the legendary Yothu Yindi – alongside world-famous activist Reverend Billy as MC for a show that brings many musical styles together to form a political voice,” said RCC Fringe Artistic Director, David Sefton.
“Pussy Riot has toured the world to huge acclaim and packed houses, but now the four essential members will appear in our own story on stage for the first time in Australia. Adelaide has a piece of history…”, said Pussy Riot member Masha.
In 2012 Masha made international news headlines when she was arrested after a performance inside Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Since then she has toured the world with Pussy Riot: Riot Days, a searing piece of gig theatre, a mix of music, documentary footage and political commentary, which has its Adelaide premiere with all four members from February 27 to March 3.
Yothu Yindi is considered one of the most successful Australian bands in history, their song Treaty, not only made the whole world dance, it made them think – Indigenous Australia’s call for a treaty became a global conversation and the most famous Australian political song.
Australian singer, songwriter and rapper Ecca Vandal, was born in apartheid South Africa, moving to Melbourne with her parents at a young age. Her unique voice combines genres such as hip-hop, electronica and punk rock to create her own signature sound.
Reverend Billy will be the MC for the night alongside The Stop Shopping Choir – wild anti-consumerist gospel shouters, earth-loving urban activists and an OBIE Award-winning radical performance community.
This exclusive collaboration of artists is one not to be missed. Pussy Riot, Yothu Yindi, Ecca Vandal and Reverend Billy will perform on the Maths Lawns at the University of Adelaide – RCC Fringe’s new home. Doors from 7pm.
