Praise for REB FOUNTAIN

“A beguiling, left-of-centre track, (Samson) sees Fountain embrace an alt-folk-pop vibe with moody, spoken verses transforming into a hypnotic chorus driven by a restrained but insistent synth beat. It is a brilliantly constructed song that is testament to Fountain’s remarkable musicality.” – Women In Pop

“It’s all too easy to get swept up in a live performance by Reb Fountain.” – NZ Herald

“A step towards mysticism … the New Zealand-based artist’s forthcoming self-titled LP has Nick Cave running through its veins.” – The FADER

“The down-beat folk that’s drawn comparisons to Nick Cave is more present on this new track than either of the previous singles, with sparseness taking up most of the runtime… Fountain’s dramatic yet pristine vocals get an assist from the quivering tones of The Veils’ singer Finn Andrews, the contrasting timber adding weight to the pained love of the lyrics.” – Consequence Of Sound

After the success of singles “Samson” and “When Gods Lie”, NZ local Reb Fountain has finally revealed her highly-anticipated debut album last Friday, May 1st 2020, through Flying Nun.

The album showcases the mesmerising and alluring vocals that Reb has become known for, atop pulsating folk instrumentation, creating a simultaneously soaring and mellow listen. Reb Fountain’s country roots shine through in a new tough and tense sound, while her raw and palpable voice carries through lyrical dramas of disillusionment and disbelief.

“The album is a beautiful journey and where it takes you depends on who you are – that’s the gift of music.. Once it leaves my hands it belongs to you,” said Reb Fountain. “It’s such a strange time in the world right now and although on some level it feels odd to be releasing an album amidst a pandemic, at the same time it feels utterly right. I am not an essential worker by any means, but I do believe that music and the arts are essential to the soul. I can only hope that the album reaches folks out there and provides some comfort, companionship, and acts as a vehicle for expression during our respective lockdowns and beyond… into the unknown.”

The album’s lead single, “Don’t You Know Who I Am”, revealed last Tuesday, is a particularly beautiful offering, with equal parts darkness, soulfulness, storytelling and twang. The stunning imagery in the lyrics, combined with Reb’s smoky vocals, make it an utterly encapsulating listen.

Reb Fountain tells the story behind the creation of the new single “Don’t You Know Who I Am”:

“‘Don’t You Know Who I Am’ was inspired by Benjamin Chee Chee, an Ojibway, First Nation artist… A young artist on the cusp of ‘success’ he was also Native American and in the 70s, growing up ‘indian’ in the US was particularly harsh. While you had AIM, UNA and Red Power fighting for indigenous rights and restitution, you also had extreme racism and brutality towards first nation people. One night – true to the times – Benjamin got locked up for being ‘drunk and disorderly’; for being native.  In the cell he was heard, a little tipsy and full of bravado, bragging that he was a famous artist. ‘Don’t you know who I am?’ A proud swagger amidst rampant injustice. The next day he was found hung in the cell; an apparent suicide… his entire art studio was also found; completely empty… all his works, down to his paint brushes, were gone.

‘Don’t You Know Who I Am’ is about a lot of things, but mostly it’s about who we think we are, who we want to be, who we have become and who we have left behind. It’s a rallying cry to rise up, to unite, to fight the good fight. It’s a call to dig deep, wake up, open your eyes and beat your own drum.  It bids you to hold fast, pick yourself up and keep on keeping on.”

A pre-eminent singer and performer, Reb has for years been the musicians’ secret. She’s performed and recorded with Kiwi musical icons; Neil Finn, Marlon Williams, Don McGlashan, The Eastern, The Warratahs, Finn Andrews, Tami Neilson and Julia Deans.

Reb has spent 2019 touring Europe, the UK and the USA throughout 2019, playing solo, and as part of Finn Andrews band. She then burst into 2020 with gorgeous singles “Samson” and “When Gods Lie”, which received praise from music media in both Australia and New Zealand.

With extensive worldwide touring planned for 2020, including appearances at SXSW Festival and a headline tour in Australia, Rebhas unfortunately joined the ranks of the thousands of musicians postponing live performances due to the global pandemic.
