This May, Red Bull Sound Select returns with the very first lineup programmed by Amelia Jenner, FBi Radio’s new Music Director. On May 26, the monthly music series will head to Marrickville for a late night soiree at the extension of the Portugal Madeira Club, Ricardo’s. Featuring Melbourne-via-Uganda dancehall artist SK Simeon, chaotic audio-visual duo Friendships and hometown techno hero Cassius Select, the acts will unite a community of dancers from 10pm until well into the weekend’s early hours, in Sydney’s Inner West.

May’s lineup reveres late night moments, and looks to artists who encourage camaraderie and togetherness on the dance floor through their unique soundscapes. Dedicated to the city’s night owls and creatures of the night, Red Bull Sound Select for the first time extends its hours of play to 3am.

Globally renowned reggae and dancehall artist, Melbourne’s SK Simeon takes on singjay style, singing and toasting in Luganda, his native Ugandan language, and English. Recognised for his energetic sets, Simeon has performed at numerous showcases across the country and throughout Europe. Last year, UK label Big Dada released an EP of original vocals from Simeon and Yaw Faso, in collaboration with eminent US producer Machinedrum, titled MASKYA EP. The release adds to an impressive list of collaborators for Simeon, including Tradesman, Branko, Harmon and Astronomer.

Meanwhile, Melbourne audio-visual duo, Friendships bring their highly sensory live sets of chaotic future sounds, storming drum’n’bass and ear-shearing techno to a Sydney audience. The pair have supported the likes of Erykah Badu, Thundercat and Mark Pritchard, and last year released their debut album Nullabor 1988-1989 to wide acclaim.

For the final addition to May’s lineup, Sydney-via-Toronto’s Cassius Select will run a hometown crowd through their paces. With a steady supply of hotly tipped releases through labels like DJ Haus’ UTTU imprint, Cassius Select aka Lavern Lee has spent time perfecting the sonic crushes and genre-defining sounds his techno workouts and live shows are known for.

In turn with Laneway Festival’s Travis Banko and I OH YOU’s Johann Ponniah, Jenner is one of Red Bull Sound Select’s key curators, supporting and nurturing live music discovery by pairing local established artists with breaking talent across the year’s designated events.
