Monthly music series Red Bull Sound Select reveals its next Melbourne and Sydney events, programmed by Laneway Festival’s Travis Banko. On July 27, Red Bull Sound Select heads to Carlton’s John Curtin Hotel with Melbourne jazz-hop favourites Slum Sociable headlining the night, supported by revered multi-instrumental talent Jonti and local soulful act 30/70. On the following evening, two acts from Melbourne’s bill will venture north to Chippendale’s Lansdowne Hotel for the seventh 2017 Sydney instalment as Jonti steps up to headline the night’s festivities with Slum Sociable and fresh Future Classic signee, Bus Vipers, in support.
Red Bull Sound Select celebrates kaleidoscopic soul in July, with a handpicked lineup of artists who are fusing the genre with r&b, hip-hop, pop and electronica. From their instruments and laptops, these players are painting the genre with a new vibrant sense of colour – weaving old and new elements together for a cohesive blend of contemporary music. The rich and radiant textures of their work are kaleidoscopic in sound and made for music lovers.
Performing in Melbourne and Sydney is Slum Sociable, known for their electronic blend of soul sampled grooves and hip-hop rhythms. Ahead of their anticipated debut album, the pair have received worldwide acclaim from Pigeons & Planes, BBC Radio 1 and Beats 1 for solid single releases via Kitsune and Liberation. Having toured the UK, US and appeared at festivals Splendour in the Grass and Laneway, Slum Sociable next bring their hypnotic live show to Red Bull Sound Select in July.

Joining the duo in both cities, is gifted Sydney multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist, Jonti. Additionally a touring member of The Avalanches, Jonti has spent 2017 preparing the release of his first solo material in five years. Praised by Pitchfork and SPIN, his newest release “Scrood” features 17-year-old prodigy Steve Lacy from The Internet. The collaborative track released via Future Classic and LA’s Stones Throw, adds to Jonti’s already impressive resume of recordings with Badbadnotgood, Mark Ronson and Gotye.
Appearing in Melbourne only are 30/70, the city’s soulful and sensual five-piece exploring the outer limits of jazz and hip-hop. Their sold-out releases and expressive live shows that expand to 11 members have received support from Rhythm Section’s Bradley Zero, Stamp the Wax and artists REMI, GL, Swooping Duck of Hiatus Kaiyote – ensuring their July visit is highly anticipated.
Meanwhile, Future Classic’s newest signing, Bus Vipers will play in Sydney only. The local instrumentalist and producer, Daniel Ahern is a protege of Jonti having collaborated on their live tribute show to the Avalanches’ famed Since I Left You record. Armed with his debut single “CSIRO Weeds” and an awaited EP, Ahern will continue to push the boundaries of pastiched psych-pop on stage, alongside Jonti and Slum Sociable later this month.
