Prolific hip-hop duo REMI today deliver a double dose in “Elevate” and “Get It Right” feat. Jace Excell, out via eponymous imprint House of Beige Records. The AA Side gives a toast to the pair’s astute chemistry that continues to reign at the top of Australia’s hip-hop sphere, and the monumental body of work arriving in forthcoming album, Fried, out on Friday, April 24.

A slick beat sliced by warm keys and cascading bass expels the groove behind “Elevate”. Balanced by weaving dialogue and hints of cymbal, the track is dedicated to feeling in the moment and embracing whole-hearted fun. As if pulled directly from a freestyle session, Remi’s cheeky flows thrive on explosive production forged by Sensible J, words rolling off the tongue with such ferocity they foster their own feeling.

Remi on the track: “This song is more about the feeling than the content. When Sensible J made the beat, the whole neighbourhood I was living in was obsessed with all things Parliament. Bootsy, Zapp, Bernie Worrell, Brides of Funkenstein, Redman’s Dare iz a Darkside, Georgia Anne, Dudley Perkins etc. I feel like all of that just exploded out of me and with some help with the arrangement from J, we were able to pay homage to those that came before us.”

Bumping into “Get It Right”, the second single presents a masterclass in balancing softer, intricate elements with heavier raps and punching attitude. A perfect culmination of the REMI sound, the beautifully constructed jazz and funk-driven melodies are merged with hard-hitting provocatives and Remi’s feverish yet fluid wordplay. Between formidable verses, Jace Excell’s huge soul choruses colour the space, any cracks filled by shimmering keys and saxophone. The soundtrack mirrors lyrical sentiments in strength, work, determination and laying it all out on the table to show where they’ve been and where they’ve come today.

Remi continues: “If ‘Elevate’ is an example of expression and fun, ‘Get it Right’ is what it takes to have that fun. This song is the last song on our album. It’s a reflection. On our desires, our drive, our fear and our insecurities. The journey of maintaining inner strength and working tirelessly until you get it right. Jace captured this so perfectly you probably didn’t even need to hear from me and as per usual it was an honour working with him. Sensible J once again on production with a little help from Silent Jay on the sax.”

The double release follows the duo’s heated returning single “5.A.M.” feat. Whosane and hip-hop ballad “Brain” feat. Lori, both synonymous with the REMI sound while stemming from the vast differing corners of their repertoire. Each song’s multi-layered components shine a light on the duo’s iconic brand of hip-hop, soul and R&B on full display in forthcoming LP, Fried. After waiting four years for their next full length, Fried will enter the world this April not only as a representation of their continued growth, but also a tribute to over 8 years of friendship, trust and magic that exists between this incomparable pairing.

After emerging onto the scene in 2014 with their Australian Music Prize-winning debut Raw x Infinity, REMI kept the momentum with 2016’s triple j feature & ARIA nominated sophomore album, Divas and Demons, where they shared a number of stellar collaborations including with fellow AMP-winner Sampa The Great, Manchester’s R&B/Soul singer, [ K S R ] and Jordan Rakei.

On the stage, REMI recently treated fans with appearances at Spilt Milk Ballarat, St Kilda Festival and the recent Party in the Paddock where Remi himself also took the stage in surprise sets with Briggs and Arno Faraji. A 4-date tour late last year saw a raucous, sold-out hometown show at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel and gave crowds across the country a serve of their new work. Coming up, the duo will traverse seas to take the stage at London’s Omeara for the city’s expansive fanbase on Saturday, April 25.

Adored globally, REMI’s returning slew of releases has again solidified their mark in the upper echelons of rap, hip-hop and soul, while gifting a highly-anticipated glimpse into the forthcoming record. With more Fried just around the corner, 2020 is shaping up to be another huge chapter in the REMI story.
