Originally from the tropical shores of Cairns, Australia, Andy Martin is currently based in Brisbane where he succeeded in securing funding from Arts Queensland to complete and release his debut EP. Originally a trumpet player, Martin has performed with internationally acclaimed brass bands as well as played leads in various musicals. However, a turning point for him was when James Morrison discovered Martin performing in the remote community of Yarrabah and invited him to study at the academy at the young age of 17. The young artist intends to move to London in 2021 to further his career in the industry.

Drawing inspiration from Brit Rockers Sam Fender and Catfish & The Bottlemen, guitar virtuoso John Mayer and Australian songstress Gretta Ray, his textured instrumentation along with his introspective lyrical content forms a sound ready for audiences across the world.

From performing trumpet with internationally acclaimed brass bands to playing leads in various musicals, Andy’s musical journey has been anything but orthodox. The 22-year old left his hometown of Cairns at just 17 to study under the Australian jazz great James Morrison at his Mt Gambier Academy after James discovered Andy performing in the remote community of Yarrabah.

Moving between Cairns & Brisbane after his studies and global experiences under the guiding hand of James, Andy went on to form the band Handles. It went from a 2-piece to a 5-piece and the band had a hugely successful couple of years, supporting the likes of Alex Lahey, playing at the Commonwealth Games and receiving a no. 1 spot on the overall Triple J Unearthed Charts for their song, “Selfish Lover”.

Swinging right into the rhythm of jangling guitar chords and fast-paced drums, ‘Heat Of It All’ provides an uplifting, feel-good anthem to let loose to. Encompassing a carefree and light attitude, Andy Martin takes the listeners on a personal journey as he considers the best move forward in a stagnant relationship. Delicate reminders of Martin’s past are raised towards the single as brass instruments take centre stage, at the same time creating a playful sense of dramatics to end the song.

The rising singer-songwriter further elaborates on the single, “Most of the songs I write come together in a matter of hours. ‘Heat of it All’ was not one of those. I actually wrote the hook/chorus for this around 3/4 years ago. I had been playing around with progressions and some of the verse lyrics. That is why I am so proud of this song. It shows how I have evolved as a songwriter of the last few years. If you want to dance, cry, laugh or hold somebody, this one’s for you (so everyone!).”

ANDY MARTIN Reviews

Ian Haug, Powderfinger/The Church guitarist & owner of Airlock Studios – “Andy is equal parts prodigy/savant and accessible/relatable rising star. There is a huge audience out there that love Andy, but they haven’t found him yet. His compositions are original – yet familiar. Go Andy.”

HEAT OF IT ALL

Clout, UK: “Creating highly energetic indie-rock with a twist of pop in the mix, ‘Heat Of It All’ provides an elevating sound within the current madness of the world.

Here Comes The Flood, UK: “Australian singer and multi-instrumentalist Andy Martin embodies the “no worries” mentality of his country on his new single Heat Of It All. Running out of things to say? Live in the moment and it will work out fine. A slice of catchy naivety with token slowed down middle-eight to give the dancers a change to catch to their breath.”

Triple J – Nkechi Anele: “B-b-b-b-b-bass tones are at all-time awesomeness..”

Triple J – Declan Byrne: “How big is this one!! Nice one Andy, I can see fans of Fergus James getting swept up in this too.”

.

MESS WE MADE

The Creative Issue: “The Cairns born singer is mostly a solo artist, the only instrument he isn’t playing in his tracks being the drums. From the vocals to the instrumental, what we as the audience have heard so far is truly captivating and just a tad catchy too.”

The Hype Magazine: “Mess We Made draws influence from Sam Fender and heavyweights Gang of Youths… but you definitely get the “Andy” touch. It is a very driving, up tempo, Indie Rock track delving into the highs and lows of a relationship. It has many contrasts and draws you in at every point of the song for different reasons.”

Triple J – Nkechi Anele: “For some reason, I think of Bruce Springsteen every time I hear the start of this track. probs because it makes me want to run along the beach or something. Regardless, this is a step up from his last release and a great vibe to get you up and going.“

Triple J – Declan Byrne: “That chorus is an infectious accelerator. It’s got that Mumford & Sons stamp on it too which will please a lot of people.”

Triple J – Pip Rasmussen: “Really nice vibes on this! I dunno I’m getting an almost old school 80s awakening song with a lovely raspy pop rock vocal.”

LET THIS GO AGAIN

Triple J – Nkechi Anele: “Andy has a trustworthy voice. He could sing anything, and I’d think it was real.”

Triple J – Ollie Wards: “Woah I didn’t expect that emotive power chorus, can definitely hear that Sam Fender influence. This track lifts into some ambitious movie montage vibes.”

Sounds Good Blog (UK): “It is a real sun, coming from Brisbane, in Australia, which warms our hearts despite the gray and rainy weather in Europe today. Our sun is simply called Andy.”Let This Go Again” is the artist’s first solo single. And for a first attempt, it is successful!

The track points the ups and downs of a relationship that is coming to an end. It delves into old and happy memories, and also tells how they went from good to bad. A very bright and even joyful way to highlight … a break-up!

Whether playing the trumpet with internationally renowned brass bands or playing lead roles in various musicals, Andy’s musical journey is quite varied! After being part of a group, HANDLES, Andy started a solo career, and he did well! The melody is more than attractive and makes you want to dance, the writing is neat, and the production is fantastic. A very successful first single, which announces others just as great as this one.

The artist takes care of playing all the instruments, except the drums, and it’s a real performance, which we can salute.

First single, first visit to Indie Music Center, and we are sure that we will see him again this year in our columns!”

Indie Music Centre (France): “Andrew Martin is a multi-instrumentalist from Brisbane and this is his new single “Let This Go Again”. It’s the first taste of what to expect from his upcoming EP Andy, which is planned for release towards the end of year. I am very excited to premiere it to your ears today.

Speaking on the new single, Andrew says “”Let This Go Again” basically highlights the highs and lows of the point where a relationship is finally coming to a close. It delves into old, happy memories, and how they went from good to bad to worse. It sheds light on the situation at times, but ultimately, is a breakup song.”

The combination of highs and lows really comes in strong on this new tune. A bright, upbeat instrumental is heard throughout, built by stomping beats, shimmering melodies and sunny harmonies, but cutting past these layers are Andy’s vocals, which emit an emotive set of lyrics that reveal vulnerability and heartbreak. It’s an interesting contrast but one that showcases his range and allows the real high moments on the track to form naturally. I love the way the lead melody ties in with the harmonies, and the way it flourishes with contributions from horns and extra vocal tracks too. What a tune.”
