Following on from a sold-out national tour of her motherland South Africa, Melbourne-based artist Ruby Gill has just unveiled her new single ‘Your Mum’ – recorded by Harry Pettit, and co-produced by William O’Connell and the artist herself.

‘Your Mum’ is an aptly-solo, deceptively rugged slice of melancholic indie-pop that delivers an emotional punch to the patriarchic gut. There is career-defining grit in Gill’s disproportionately large vocals, and often overwhelming bravery in her honesty. “I know I don’t cook like your mum,” she repeats plainly atop an iconic husky electric guitar, coming to simple terms with the universal struggle of inadequacy.

Two parts empowered angst and one part subtle sarcasm, the pulsing single paints an immersive picture of relatable modern abandonment: “I’m sorry for crying so loud / I’m sorry for waking you in the early hours / I know you’re trying to get some rest / you’ve got work in the morning / got to look your best.”

Gill tells the story behind ‘Your Mum’: “We fall in love with people who remind us a little bit of our parents, But then, in a burst of 2am Freudian clarity and angst, we realise that those are pretty stifling expectations. So this is about being not good enough. About trying to be yourself in someone else’s kitchen. About admitting that you’re not f*cking fine. And it’s about your mum.”

In line with the release of ‘Your Mum’, Gill is set to headline the Workers Club, Melbourne on November 25th, as well as join indie-pop stalwarts Lime Cordiale on eight shows of their ‘Dirt Cheap’ tour throughout November and December. The run of dates will be capped off with a performance at Woodford Folk Festival, where the songstress will join the likes of Alex the Astronaut, Julia Jacklin, Kimbra and Stella Donnelly.

Ruby Gill has previously featured on major and boutique South African festivals such as Oppikoppi, Splashy Fen, Lush Festival and Smoking Dragon, and Australian events Happy Wanderer and Kennedys Creek.

In the coming weeks Ruby Gill will reveal an accompanying music video for ‘Your Mum’.
