Sampa The Great is back today with a final taste of her debut album, The Return, with “Heaven” feat. Whosane, out via Ninja Tune. The single arrives alongside the news of The Return in-store performances and signings, coming to the iconic record stores of Melbourne, Sydney, Parramatta and Brisbane.
Premiered with a first play with Ebro Darden on Beats 1 , “Heaven” is an amalgamation of Sampa’s perfected influences, driven by her commanding rhymes as they wade through a stream of soulful, hip-hop sounds. Consistently championing her talented peers, the release features the combined angelic vocals from Whosane and Mwanjé, marking “Heaven” as yet another slice of brilliance from the Sampa The Great.
Sampa on the single: “Heaven is where I detail my encounter with a near death experience, or so I thought. With this experience and in most cases for people who experience such, it causes you to change your thinking patterns and evaluate the importance of certain things in your life. Heaven is the detailing of that stage and the emotions behind it. Sung by the ever talented and beautiful Whosane, along with the most beautiful vocals by my own lil sister, Mwanjé”
Alongside today’s release, Sampa The Great announces she treat fans to a tour of exclusive in-store performances and signings in celebration of The Return. Kicking off on Friday, September 13 at Melbourne’s iconic Northside Records, she will make her way to Sydney for two appearances on Saturday, September 14, first stopping by The Record Store in Darlinghurst before visiting Parramatta’s Beatdisc that evening. Wrapping up the weekend, Sampa will treat Brisbane fans on Sunday, September 15 for her final appearance at Jet Black Cat.
Today’s news arrives ahead of Sampa The Great’s debut album The Return; a body of work that has chronicled a four year journey towards finding home within herself. Enlisting a string of esteemed collaborators, The Return is a culmination of Sampa’s closest creative and personal relationships, mixed by Jonwayne (of Stones Throw notoriety), MsM (Skepta/Boy Better Know) and Andrei Eremin (GRAMMY-nominated engineer for Hiatus Kaiyote and Chet Faker), with productions by Silentjay, Slowthai producer Kwes Darko, Clever Austin (Perrin Moss of Hiatus Kiayote), Blue Lab Beats and Syreniscreamy.
The fruits of Sampa the Great’s back catalogue have accumulated over 33 million streams collectively since her 2015 breakout, The Great Mixtape. Her second long-form release, Birds And The BEE9, was defined by The Observer won the Australian Music Prize as Best Album Of 2017 and her 2018 single “Energy”, premiered via Zane Lowe’s show on Apple Music’s Beats 1, with the accompanying video reaching 1.2M YouTube views to date.
Recently selling out a run of shows across the US and conquering the world-renowned Glastonbury festival, Sampa is about to set out on a mammoth tour across Australia, before heading to the UK and Europe.
