Brisbane’s own multi-talented musical luminary Sampology (aka Sam Poggioli) today releases his highly anticipated newest creation, the Mt Glorious EP. The six-track ethereal journey showcases the producer’s signature fusion of new experimental sounds, live instrumentation and field recordings that breathe life into his seamless work. The Mt Glorious EP is the product of years of evolution for the artist, as he has peeled back the layers of his musical palette and influences to produce an enchanting musical vision, placing himself at the forefront of Australian electronic music.
The compelling record opens with “Teal Sunrise”, a symphony of alluring synths and glistening wind instruments that perfectly capture the tranquil paradise awaiting throughout the entire EP. The calming oasis soon drops into the steady beat of the title track “Mt Glorious”, a collaboration of driving drums, lush vocals from singer Hannah Macklin, field recordings from Brisbane’s Mt Glorious National Park and is brought home by ambient live instrumentals via all-female string quartet Meraki. Careful assembly of these elements makes Mt Glorious an expansive listen that highlights the depth of Sampology’s pure musical talent.
Drawing you back from the ethereal paradise that Mt Glorious offers, is the dancing steel drums and upbeat vibes of “SMILE”, that speaks to Sampology’s balearic influences. Injecting some soulful grooves and bringing an all-star line-up to the table is “Rising Up”, that features the vocals of Stones Throw heroes Dudley Perkins and Georgia Ann Muldrow. “Rising Up” couples hip-hop infused vocals, harmonic complexity with euphoric synths, showcasing Sampology’s undeniable skill to weave feature artists so finely and decisively into his tracks, delivering a complex and seductive listen from start to finish.
Piano hooks and broken beats curate the jazz undertones of “My Place”, proving yet again that there is no genre that can go untouched by Sam’s innovative production skill. Joining Sampology on this electronic masterpiece is NZ born, Brisbane raised / UK based vocalist Jordan Rakei. With a musical ability that transcends age, Rakei’s heavenly vocals paired with the undulating synths, understated saxophone instrumentation and subtle electronic touch create a dynamic and euphoric listen that solidifies the mastery in Rakei and Sampology’s pairing. Concluding song “After the Storm” hybrids electronic and jazz influences, with a live band’s body-moving soundtrack.
The EP is hot off the heels of Sampology’s national tour and follows the release of acclaimed singles “SMILE” and the title track “Mt Glorious” which heralded support from tastemakers globally including Seven Davis Jnr, LeFto and local hero CC Disco. Alongside industry praise the singles have received notable radio support with spins on triple j, triple j unearthed, Double J, BBC Radio 6, NTS Rhythm Section, as well as an addition to triple j Unearthed Best New Music playlist. His previous Natural Selections EP has similarly garnered global support, receiving a Gilles Peterson approved Worldwide Premiere for its single “Thicker Than Water”, and a Boiler Room debut for the title track. Arriving ahead of his performance at A Love Supreme Block Party alongside Theo Parrish (US), let the talented, versatile producer take you on a captivating sonic journey with his colourful six-track release, Mt Glorious.
