‘Ripple Effect’ follows on from Scott’s infectious guitar-pop offering ‘PDA’, and is lifted from his debut album Hôtel de Ville. The single, one of the more introspective moments on the album, marks the next step in the 22-year-old artist’s burgeoning career.
‘Ripple Effect’ exudes the kind of emotional maturity and self-realisation that belies Scott’s age. Through the song, Scott muses that the issues we have are a result of the ripple effects of all of the history that came before us. He continues on to explore all the ways we can start fresh, free of patterns of the past.
“Ripple Effect was written after a long conversation with some friends about the hard moments we’ve had to overcome in our lives. My good friend and co-writer Simon Wilcox was stressing about how odd it feels when we’re fighting with our loved ones because it feels like all our negative, violent and dysfunctional words aren’t coming from us, but from something we’ve learned. Having all had confusing and painful experiences with our parents, friends, and siblings, we figured there’s this beautiful moment where one decides to overcome this learned negativity by “unlearning” it, and choosing something better. People often say “I won’t be like my parents when I have kids.” Of course this is difficult, and some would say impossible, but I feel that just the action of trying can make life beautiful and worthwhile.” said Scott.
The release of ‘Ripple Effect’ is accompanied by a series of remixes and a beautiful video, directed by Scott’s long-time video collaborator Ben Knetchel, which pays homage to John Lennon’s classic single ‘Imagine’.
