After premiering via triple j Unearthed last night, Melbourne outfit Self Talk have officially lifted the lid on their new single ‘Don’t Ask’ today.
It comes after the five-piece announced their limited edition 7″ through Domestic La La in June. The strictly limited physical release (featuring the just-released nostalgia-soaked bop ‘Food Court’ on side A) is available now.
On ‘Don’t Ask’, Self Talk vocalist Stacey Cicivelli says: “‘Don’t Ask’ originally started as a little add-on to our song ‘Clean Washing’. I started playing the first verse as an intro to that song at shows. We eventually worked it into a full song and it became a kind of part 2 to Clean Washing, a bit of a resolution.
“It’s about realising that some of the stuff you’re fed growing up about being a successful woman is nonsense, about seeing yourself clearly and making your own rules.”

Following a couple of years on the down-low on this project — while various members pursued success with local rock favourites Ceres — Self Talk returned with the release of ‘Food Court’ to a swell of praise. triple j Home & Hosed presenter Declan Byrne noted “there’s a heartfelt indie sweetness to it but the drips of punk that blend in are so perfect.”
After finding early underground support on their 2015 single ‘Fist Fight‘, Self Talk began swinging heads at triple j in 2016/17 with cuts like ‘Old Habits‘ and ‘Bedside Dictionary‘.
‘Don’t Ask’ was produced by Domestic La La label-head James Tidswell, whose other production credits include the likes of Dune Rats and Dear Seattle.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
