Returning from a short, unofficial hiatus in the wake of weddings and funerals, Brisbane rock band Semantics are back in full force with their new single Calico, out today via Side One Dummy Records.

LISTEN TO CALICO

Influenced by artists as subtle as Augie March to fellow Brisbane rock legends Violent Soho, as shoegazey as Superheaven to the indie punk of Perth act Sly Withers, Calico touches on every sub-genre of rock in an incredibly cohesive body of work.

The lyrical content is more poetic and metaphorical than ever, yet still delivering the earworm hooks fans have grown to adore. This is Australian alternative rock at its finest.

Today, the band also drop a video for the new single.

On Calico, lead vocalist / guitarist Callum says “it was a snapshot of when I was living in a share house, so I spoke very literally about that; the names of my roommates, what video game they were playing. What the cat looks like…it’s just fun. I like abstract, but I also like literal lyrics; I do both, pick a song and decide if I’m gonna be abstract or literal. ‘Calico’ is completely literal.”
