“Purveyors in fine indie-rock with a distinct groove-filled bite, keeping things laid back and relaxed as they unite happy-go-lucky guitar strums with earworming vocal hooks.” – Pilerats

“The type of rock that has your head spinning by the end as you come down from the invigorating highs.” – Declan Byrne, triple j

Brisbane Indie-Rock royalty Shag Rock drop their eagerly anticipated double album, Double Overhead, receive an ARIA Certified Gold Record for ‘Sunbleached Girl’, and prepare for their national tour, kicking off tomorrow at the Waghorn to West festival in Ipswich.

The mammoth 18-track release is an achingly vulnerable rollercoaster of heartbreaks, little heart shakes, bliss and miss and everything in between. While reminiscent of the group’s earlier style, Double Overhead takes the band’s iconic sound and elevates it with new elements of experimental production. For fans, Jacob Reed (vocals/guitar) says this gift of a double album presents Shag Rock’s heart sewn tight to their sleeve, overflowing with butter-smooth grooves and infectious, upbeat jams: “In a time where everyone has been more isolated and listening to more music in their homes, a double treat seemed like a nice reward for the ever-so-patient fans too,” he says.

Featuring ‘April Nights’, ‘Golden Lungs’, and their latest single ‘Blur’, the release has been a project in the pipeline since 2015: “It’s a collection of moments in our lives, timepieces really, and essentially our best songs that have stood the test of time over the years,” says Jacob. Throughout the double album, each track is generously laden with lush textures and syrupy melodies with their ever-present raw storytelling shining through at the core. The bottom line of the album aims to connect with listeners, encouraging them to embrace their emotions with the message that “It’s okay to feel.” Diving head-first into topics such as the stigmas surrounding mental health, tracks like ‘Creaky Minds’ offer a warm hug amidst layers of velvety vocals and sunny guitar riffs. The album’s focus track, ‘Repair’ exudes a similar, visceral emotion but sets itself apart with its restrained slow build, pieced together from the bare bones of a classic piano ballad. This stripped-back, Beatles-inspired track provides a subdued contrast to the rest of the album, spotlighting an artfully constructed instrumentation and introspective narrative that clings to the heartstrings.

Since the release of final album single ‘Blur’ in June, Shag Rock have been featured across multiple Spotify playlists including New Music Friday AU/NZ and India, Rock Out, Indie Arrivals, and Local Noise, as well as receiving a string of four-star reviews on triple j Unearthed. A live video from their sold-out show at The Tivoli uploaded earlier this year showcases a glimpse of these born performers, making it obvious why the band are attracting so much attention, recently ticking over 40 million streams across their catalogue.

The release of Double Overhead also marks the occasion of Shag Rock receiving their first ARIA Certified Gold Record for their hit track ‘Sunbleached Girl’ off their 2017 debut album Barefoot. Since the release of their debut, Shag Rock have made their mark on the stage, touring the US and performing to multiple sold-out shows under their belt, as well as supporting powerhouses Ocean Alley, Lime Cordiale and The Rubens. Joining them on their upcoming national run throughout July and August are Brisbane’s The Bluebottles and Kurilpa Reach as well as party starters Thunderfox, Willowbank Grove, Echowave, Big Dinner, Rum Jungle and more. With a number of shows already sold out and considering Shag Rock’s previous sold-out Australian and New Zealand tours, a tip to fans is to swipe in early or miss out.
