Electronic virtuoso ShockOne has long been described as a pioneer of the drum & bass scene in Australia. With a suite of exceptional bodies of work including the ARIA #1 ‘Universus’, the Perth based artist has developed a flair for sonic exploration alongside his ever-growing technical mastery that inspires a constant wave of innovative creations. Now manifesting over a decade of experience, the industry respected artist shares a career defining moment with the release of his third studio album ‘Organism Algorithm’, all indicating that ShockOne is charged and ready for more. Alongside the album ShockOne also announces that his imprint Dark Machine Records will now be distributed through ADA worldwide, an exciting chapter as he takes the label to the next level.
The 12 track album is a multifaceted body of work that impressively moves through the hyper granular and extra rhythmic, to the ethereal and visceral moments all experienced in the world of drum & bass, the album title itself offering this very juxtaposition. Solidifying his position as one of Australia’s eminent electronic acts, ‘Organism Algorithm’ showcases the evolution of ShockOne and his wealth of production knowledge and engineering expertise, seamlessly blending techniques, sounds and styles that find their home together on this collection of sweltering anthems.
ShockOne shares “This album is a window into my creativity over the last few years, and a reflection of my state of mind throughout that process, nothing more nothing less.” On the meaning behind the album and title ‘Organism Algorithm’ ShockOne adds “the whole idea of identity and the self comes into question if all our thoughts and actions can be reduced to algorithms. I’ve been obsessed with this idea for quite some time, particularly with the recent popularisation and widespread access to AI. I find it interesting that the more we learn about ourselves, the more blurred the lines become between human intelligence and artificial intelligence, and how we define the two.”
Kicking off the album is the brooding yet explosive ‘Alone’, a track that sees ShockOne stake his claim at the frontier of bass music as his cutting-edge production techniques and exceptional engineering ability are brought to the fore, setting the tone for the entire album experience. Transient moments of ‘Alone’ trail into ‘Open Your Mind’ as subtle echoes of the commanding lyric slowly take over. Hyperthymic, it picks up the pace and instantly transports listeners to the club floor as expertly crafted vocal chops are intertwined with mind-bending floating oscillations, the bounce emanating from the bass line a driving force underneath it all. With looming chords creating the ultimate sense of anticipation we enter the next phase of the album as ‘Ready To Go’ opens ominously across the horizon, the first in a series of emotionally evocative tracks soon to ensue. ShockOne’s signature synthesisers galvanise anyone in reach as collaborators, UK vocal dynamite Bright Sparks, set fire to the night, a winning formula that saw support from KISS FM UK, The Music, and more. Following this is ‘Organism Algorithm’ which showcases ShockOne’s edge for experimentation on the album, an eccentric lullaby turned percussive masterpiece where synthesisers, ethereal vocals and metallic pads are diced meticulously, all converging to one almighty drop before returning to the angular yet soothing sounds of the synthesiser, as if it were all a dream. A sense of serenity remains as the acoustic strums of ‘Higher Rush’ roll on through before collaborators, UK based duo Freaks & Geeks, enter with a thrilling fusion of heart pounding rhythms and soul stirring vocals. An invitation to lose yourself in the music in a harmonious synergy that is both emotionally charged and ready for the dance floor. Next ShockOne teams up with New Zealand music legends Lee Mvtthews to deliver an instant classic in ‘Thinkin About’ which sees both artists use their impressive technical experience to craft dynamic and textural percussive lines with an infectious energy that is bursting at the seams. Pauline Herr soon enters the fray with her impressive vocal delivery on ‘Heart On Fire’, a nostalgic surrender to true bliss of loving another and the perfect lyrical accompaniment to ‘Thinkin About’. While ShockOne’s innate ability to move through the raw and emotional side of bass music to the uber-industrial is on full display throughout the album, ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’ sees him truly push the limits as he slinks into warehouse mode with the speed and intensity that birthed drum & bass some years ago. ShockOne’s trademark hard-hitting bass lines and grimy undertones continue on ‘Follow Me’, a track that saw full rotation on triple j and reached #25 on the Australian Shazam Chart and #14 in New Zealand, he explores the realities of the online landscape through a computer-generated vocal in sonic contrast to the rawness of the featured vocalists throughout the album. With his foot on the sonic gas pedal, ShockOne is unstoppable through the rave infused ‘Say Woah’ and synth heavy ‘Hardwired’ featuring his sister, and long time collaborator, Reija Lee’s euphoric tones. The ‘Organism Algorithm’ experience concludes with ‘It’s All Over’, a powerful and punchy exploration in sound design that exemplifies ShockOne’s experience as a producer and musician as intricate layers of sound are weaved together to craft the ultimate sign off.
With a collection of records that have amassed over 30 million streams across platforms, Perth artist ShockOne, Karl Thomas, has cemented his position as a cornerstone of Australian dance music. Igniting his career with the drum and bass classic ‘Polygon’ taken from the debut ‘ShockOne EP’ released on Viper records, ShockOne has gone from strength to strength as he has honed and refined his sound. Off the success of his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Universus’ in 2013, Karl relocated to London touring the album extensively throughout Europe and the UK, all the while producing a string of singles and remixes for the likes of DJ Snake, Dillon Francis, NGHTMRE & What So Not, to name a few. Non-stop on the move, ShockOne soon shared his sophomore album ‘A Dark Machine’ which saw significant streaming success, all before launching his own record label Dark Machine Records. Since the inception of ShockOne, he has built a dedicated audience of fans that have seen him perform at world renowned festivals including Let It Roll, Drop That, Liquicity, Rampage Open Air, Snow Machine, and Spilt Milk, as well as his own national Dark Machine Warehouse tours. With the drop of ‘Organism Algorithm’ ShockOne is set to electrify audiences once again with his upcoming tour across Australia and New Zealand, as well as supporting long time friends Pendulum on their arena tour around the UK.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
