Following the release of his striking singles ‘Moonlight’, and ‘Bodies’, Birmingham-based SIPHO. drops his debut EP AND GOD SAID… The self-produced EP is filled with R&B, gospel and pop influences. It explores the 21-year old musician relationship with God and religion, as seen through his biblical references and pastel-tinted aesthetic. It is a visceral EP, strengthened by his captivating and emotive vocals. A strong and musically mismatched EP.

AND GOD SAID… sees SIPHO, raised as part of the Seventh-day Adventist church, reconcile his relationship with God, the titular concept of the EP, musing on contrasting themes of devout morality and rebellious scepticism.

As a YouTube-scrolling teenager, he recalls happening upon a channel called It’s Supernatural, a chat show where evangelicals would come on the show to share their close brushes with hell. Naturally, the concept terrified him, he recalls: “For like a year and a half, I was really involved in church, very religiously aware of the things I was doing. Even the music I was making was really existential. But then eventually, I realised that everyone who came on the show with a story also seemed to have a book to sell, some special text that could ‘reverse your sinful DNA’. It was then that I realised there’s a 50/50 to this – you can believe, but we can never truly know. I’ll always have that awareness of something bigger than us, but I can’t tell you what it is. Nobody can.”

While AND GOD SAID… cannot provide solid answers, it is the sound of an artist who feels wiser than his years, finding peace where he stands instead of running in fear and it’s a frame of mind that’s seen him need to question all norms, while subverting preconceived notions – in faith and in his art.

Following the release of his debut EP AND GOD SAID…, Dirty Hit’s Birmingham-based multi-hyphenate SIPHO. today shares a live performance video for the moving EP closer ‘Almost Lost’, shot live at the beautiful Birmingham Symphony Hall. The video finds the virtuosic musician showcasing his singular talent ahead of soon to be announced live dates.

SIPHO.’s debut EP showcases a virtuosic ability to transcend musical expectations while speaking to the duality of our modern existence. He’s often suspected that some might judge his appearance and presume a certain sound – “people are always quick to see a Black person and assume RnB” – but his repertoire provides sounds both harsh and honeyed, a textured tapestry that confidently defies classification.

To do so, he’s drawn on every aspect of his humanity, plumbing depths that might be difficult to face, requiring both fierce commitment and emotional exorcism – the sort that’s been brewing for some time.
