Over two nights in September some of Australia’s finest talents in Husky Gawenda, Dan Kelly, Charm of Finches, Hannah Cameron, Stephen Grady and Dan Challis will come together at Chapel off Chapel to deliver Songs From The Canyon. A very special show that will take the audience back to Laurel Canyon during the 60s and 70s, telling the tales of the artists that called this place home by way of beautiful performances of the songs from the era, the likes of ‘California Dreaming’, ‘River’ and ‘God Only Knows’.
Nestled in the Hollywood Hills of LA the mountainous neighborhood known as Laurel Canyon was home to a rich tapestry of singers and musicians. Songwriters were coming from everywhere to this little place of hidden hills and valleys of ramshackle houses just 5 minutes away from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. In a time of peace, love and understanding, the counterculture of the Vietnam war, the likes of The Doors, Neil Young, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, The Byrds, The Mama and the Papas, Crosby, Stills and Nash and many more, all lived within a few streets of one another.
Amongst the jasmine and weed scented hills magical harmonies and sublime melodies echoed throughout the Canyon. A modern musical village was born as they played songs for one another with acoustic guitars in all-night jam sessions in each other’s houses, moving from house to house jamming, writing songs, trying out harmonies, forming and reforming themselves into new groups.
Of his involvement in the project, award winning singer songwriter Husky Gawenda reflects, “the songs of Laurel Canyon echoed down the hallway of my family home as far back as I can remember. I discovered my folks’ Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Carole King records when I was a kid learning to play guitar and write songs. I’ve been in love with the sound ever since and in a way, in my own music I’m always reaching for the feeling I had back then, the magic I felt listening to those records. I’m thrilled to now be a part of this show, bringing these songs to life and to be doing it with Australia’s finest folk singers and musicians.”
Songs From The Canyon is the vision of artist manager Rick Chazan who first had an inkling for the show 17 years ago after watching one of his artists, Chris Pickering, perform at Brisbane’s Troubadour. At the end of the night a few of the artists came together to cover a Crosby, Stills and Nash song.
“I’ll never forget it, the whole room collectively dropped their jaws and gasped. Half the room had never heard of CSN. It was a magic moment and I got thinking how good it would be to hear those harmonies in a beautiful seated venue. Leap forward to Melbourne 2020, lockdown and lots of time on my hands and the idea came up to do a show around this incredible era of music. The show itself isn’t musical theatre, it’s really a gig with some of the best songs of all time. I am so happy with the artists that will come together for the show, they are the best of the best! It really is going to be an incredible show and Chapel Off Chapel is the perfect setting. It has been a long wait as this is the fifth Covid induced postponement but it is definitely happening and I cannot wait to see it myself!”

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
