SONIC aGENDER:
Music experts explore gender, artistry, genre and aesthetics at
DAREBIN MUSIC FEAST 2018
Three innovative events led by influential local music industry figures
.
.
Sonic aGender, curated by Janelle Johnstone, is an entire weekend of events that consider the relationships between gender, sound and narrative. Underpinning the curation of this year’s Darebin Music Feast program is an intention to recognise and respond to current dialogue around inequality and accessibility within the music sector. Sonic aGender was conceived in response to this.
It’s a way to invite people in and contribute to this important conversation. Whether you’re a musician, a collector, a producer or a punter, immerse yourself in the many and varied layers of Melbourne’s independent music making.
Local Darebin legend Jen Cloher will kick off the Sonic aGender program on Friday October 19th, with a keynote address exploring key themes of gender, songwriting, wall breaking and music making. As a co-founder of Milk! Records and a mentor to hundreds of artists through her I Manage My Music Program, Jen is an internationally-acclaimed artist and outspoken advocate for artist rights and DIY music scenes.
Participants will then have a unique opportunity to engage in open round table chats with some of Melbourne’s most illustrious music makers including Jenny McKechnie (Cable Ties), Romy Vager (RVG), Erica Dunn (Mod Con, TFS, Harmony), Barb Waters, Steph Crase (Summer Flake), Alice Skye, Linda Johnston (Little Ugly Girls, The Dacios) and Caroline Kennedy. Followed by networking and light refreshments.
The morning of Saturday October 20th sees Thornbury Picture House play host to the ultimate Saturday morning rage session. Clip Flicks is a carefully curated music clip binge on the big screen, with a live Q & A featuring some of Melbourne’s most provoking musicians, artists and film buffs: Angie Hart, Cerise Howard (3RRR, Czech & Slovak Film Festival), Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore (Her Sound, Her Story) and Laura Imbruglia. Be in the audience as they explore the collaborative process of transitioning song to visual narrative.
Sunday October 21st closes out the Sonic aGender mini program with Shake The Tree: an all ages day time show at Thornbury Bowls Club featuring live performances from local acts The Pink Tiles, Ally Boom Boom & The Cool Bananas and Sugar Fed Leopards. There’s even an old-school cake stall, meat tray raffle, snag sizzle, barrel boy, plus ‘Jack Attack’ kids bowling included in entry – perfect for the family that loves a boogie.
Curator Janelle Johnstone has been a music industry and community development professional for over two decades. She is also a musician and a local Darebin resident, and is currently completing her PhD at La Trobe University in cultural anthropology conducting an analysis of gendered participation in Melbourne’s independent live music industry.
