Stella Donnelly is thrilled to share new single ‘Old Man’ and the accompanying visual interpretation today. Premiering on triple j, the track marks the first of new music to arrive from her debut album.

Stella says of the track: “I came up with the chords and chorus to this song in 2017 around the time when Woody Allen called the #metoo movement a witch hunt. It was a very strange feeling for me watching the world change right before my eyes and to see that these men who had exploited their power for so long were actually being held accountable for their actions.”

Along with the new single, Stella revealed details of her forthcoming debut album to triple j’s Veronica and Lewis. Due out 8 March, Beware Of The Dogs was recorded in Western Australia with a full band (Jennifer Aslett, Talya Velenti and George Foster) and produced by Dean Tuza (The Rubens, Kim Churchill, Thelma Plum). The 13-track release is a portrait of Stella taking charge.

She says: “This album made me feel like I was back in the driver’s seat. It was really liberating and grounding to realise that no one can f**k with this except me.”

In 2017, Stella boldly introduced herself with the release of her debut EP Thrush Metal. The seven-track compilation featured breakout track ‘Mechanical Bull’ and the impactful ‘Boys Will Be Boys’, scored the inaugural Bigsound Levi’s Music Prize, the J Award for Unearthed Artist of the Year, and the WAM Award for Song of The Year.

PRAISE FOR STELLA DONNELLY

“I’m not normally one to make predictions but I’ll say this – Stella Donnelly will put out her debut album in 2019 and from seeing her perform new songs and current faves last night I’m pretty sure her debut album will make my 2019 top ten. She is poignant and charming. Wise and talented. Incredible voice and engaging performer without pretense. Wow!” – Bob Boilen, NPR Music

“[Stella Donnelly] has a modest, guileless voice and folky tunes, but her songs can quickly flare into resentment and, if necessary, open anger. In ‘Boys Will Be Boys,’ a graceful waltz, she comforted and defended a sexual-assault victim, while in ‘Mechanical Bull’ she warned that she’d ‘throw you all off me.’ She was chipper but adamant.” – The New York Times

“At just under three minutes, [‘Mechanical Bull’] is over in a flash. But the impact isn’t lost; when you’re as sharp a lyricist as Donnelly, even a brief offering can pack a punch.” — Pitchfork

“[Stella Donnelly]’s art was openly frank about real life and remarkably cognisant of the audience, so much so that her songs extended a hand as much as they told a story or presented a point of view.” — LA Times
