“[Lacy’s music is] young in its casual, conversational songwriting, but timeless in mood and attitude, with the WARMTH and CHARISMA of decades-old STEVIE WONDER and PRINCE…”
 – FANTASTIC MAN

“Lacy’s not interested in fitting into anyone’s idea of what a musician should do or what music should sound like.”

Steve Lacy — best known as the guitarist of space-soul band THE INTERNET – has released new track titled Playground, the second single to be lifted from his debut solo album, Apollo XXI, which is OUT TODAY on 3qtr via AWAL.

Playground, described by the likes of Paste Magazine is “a springy funk number that tries to weld together jangle pop with a very, very obvious Prince influence.” Lacy spoke about the song’s creation and sound with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1. “I think this was in my Prince phase, where I was all Prince, but I also have my Dirty Projectors phase in there. It came with that riff, and then the hook came, and… I wrote the verses in that month, so I held on to that hook and everything for a while before I actually wrote the song.”

The single’s release comes a day after the artist debuted a video for the former half of the album closer Outro Freestyle/4ever, which finds Lacy making out with synth-pop darling ABRA in an intimate, one-minute-long continuous shot. Earlier this year, Lacy released a taste of Apollo XXI in April, in the form of N Side, with The New York Times saying the song “is a narcotically mellow inversion of casually strutting 1970s R&B. On the one hand, it’s about yearning, with Lacy’s vocals aquatically damp; but on the other, Lacy is far too at ease — far too chill — to really break a sweat.”

Lacy is currently one of four covers for the current ‘Voice of a Generation’ issue of i-D alongside environmental activist Greta Thunberg and models Nathan Westling and Ugbad Abdi. Read the exclusive interview HERE.

About Steve Lacy:
At the ripe age of 20, the Grammy-nominated Compton native already has a veteran’s resume; he was Wired Magazine’s Tech Visionary, Time Magazine’s Most Influential Teen, produced-written-featured with Solange, J Cole, Vampire Weekend, Blood Orange and produced some of Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN on his iPhone. He’s also toured the world 3x with his band mates The Internet, given a TED Talk, worked extensively with Louis Vuitton on behalf of Virgil Abloh (including walking at the LV Paris Fashion Week show) and has now eschewed all major label offers to release his first album on his terms.
