Stonnington Jazz promises a host of unique opportunities for music and art lovers, families and foodies alike to bask in throughout this year’s ten-day event. Kicking off this week with plenty of opportunities for you to get involved too!
In a truly unmissable opportunity, legend of jazz Dr. Judy Bailey OAM will perform a unique and interactive one-time show as part of the festival on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 13. After the procession of afternoon teas and flowers what better way to cap off the day with such a memorable experience to share with Mum. Bailey will be taking requests and inviting the audience to decide on the repertoire for the evening.
The Jazz Jam with The Paul Williamson Hammond Combo, Monday May 14, for jazz-loving musicians of all ages and abilities. There’ll also be The Jazz Poetry Slam an adored highlight of the program that is triumphantly returning for its third instalment. The slam invites poets and spoken word artists to recite their work, while a jazz trio improvises a soundtrack under their performance in front of the live audience.
Stonnington Jazz will also feature a reworking of one the most inventive and enduring pieces of work in popular music, Duke Ellington’s The Far East Suite (1967). Regarded as one of the most important composers, bandleaders and pianists in popular music, Ellington stunned the world with his ambitious offering – the Grammy-award winning release describing the awe and exhilaration that his band felt from their experience touring Syria, Jordan, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iran, Lebanon, Turkey and Japan. Ever inspired by Ellington’s visionary project, on Sunday May 20, Melbourne’s jazz identity Steve Sedergreen will rework The Far East Suite Jazz with a cast of more than thirty band members and special guest artists.
For kids and kids at heart comes a series of free events including Jazz Jammin’ on Glenferrie – an afternoon of food trucks and jazz courtesy of students from Malvern’s music schools along Valetta Street – as well as Jazz Storytime at Malvern Library.
The Double Take series will see pairs of prolific jazz musicians coming together in collaborative performance at The Loft, Chapel Off Chapel. Melbourne saxophonists Angela Davis (alto) and Julien Wilson (tenor) will meet on Saturday May 12 for a set of fiery brass, meanwhile in vocals comes two of Brisbane’s finest in Kristin Beradi and Kayleigh Pincott on Sunday May 13. East will unite with West when Melbourne’s own leading jazz guitarist James Sherlock comes together with Perth’s Sorcha Albuquerque on Saturday May 19. Like all the visionary musicians featured in this series, they are hot-in-demand jazz wonders who are sure to put on a feast for the ears.
And finally for foodies comes the return of Jazz Tables to connect festival-goers with top-notch local food and beverage purveyors to enjoy before or after a festival show. The bill includes modern Italian wonder Sagra, French bistro Resto BoBo, Mediterranean offering Neptune Food & Wine, Impala Bar, Malvern Spanish hotspot Remy Bar de Tapas y Vino and more. A selection of the restaurants involved will also host to a variety of in-house jazz entertainment offerings in what promises to be a monumentally delicious addition to their program.
