Sydney indie trio STUMPS have today released the anticipated second album Arcadia via Cooking Vinyl Australia. The album is led by the latest focus track “Cyanide”, landing ahead of a 5-date tour around the country in April.

Delving into the heavier notions of existence, “Cyanide” feels like a farewell to the environment STUMPS left behind on their debut album All Our Friends. The band describe it as “the breath before the plunge”, representing the merging of their ideological roots and the sonic progress they’ve achieved over the past four years. As they do so well, the track anchors feelings of lightness into introspection and yearning.

Working with producer Fletcher Matthews (Trophy Eyes, RAAVE TAPES, The Buoys), Arcadia is defined by its blurring of genres, melding dance, pop and rock to traverse influences that span the fun-loving indie sleaze of early ’10s, to kooky dancefloor fillers. Across its 12 tracks, the band are shedding their skin – from bright and emotive tracks like  “Brinawa St.” and Life’s Moving Past You” to the danceable “David Byrne” or “Seratonin” – the album conveys that the darkest moments in life can fuel the most joyful.

On the feeling of Arcadia, frontman Kyle Fisher shared “it’s like walking home alone after the best night of your life. Your mind awash with the beauty of recent nostalgia, gratefulness and bewilderment from a glimpse in time that you’ll never truly be able to recreate. The distant thump of a kick drum in the back of your mind, the soaring guitars reverberating around your head as you put one foot in front of the other, trusting they know their way home.”

Bassist Merrick Powell added “I’d like to think that people will see this record as a refreshing and modern take on indie rock music. A song like ‘Dose’ feels like the best amalgamation of all things STUMPS, and has some great dancey moments, honest moments, dramatic and almost-woozy moments.”

In April, STUMPS will take their new album on a tour around Australia with stops in Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Fremantle. The Arcadia tour follows a huge 2023 on the live circuit for the band, with a 13-date national tour under their belt and supporting Aussie folk heroes Boy & Bear on 7-dates through regional NSW. Their praised showcases at BIGSOUND saw NME Australia and RUSSH Magazine include them in their Seven Australian Acts Who Blew Us Away at BIGSOUND 2023 and Future faces: 4 musicians to know from BIGSOUND roundups respectively. And the three-piece performed a vivacious set at Wollongong’s Yours & Owls Festival, and showcased at the inaugural SXSW Sydney to close out the year.

Over the past five years, STUMPS – Kyle Fisher (vocals/guitar), Merrick Powell (bass) and Jonathan Dolan (drums) – have grown into one of Australia’s most exciting upcoming indie-rock bands. From their singleMt Pleasantsoundtracking a TVC for the Paralympics to touring with the likes of Boy & Bear, Ball Park Music and Trophy Eyes, alongside lucrative slots at festivals like FOTSUN and Lost Paradise, STUMPS continue to subvert expectations with each release, racking up a sizeable fanbase in the process.
