“Beyond its narrative sharpness, beyond its thematic generosity, the achievement of Natural Brown Prom Queen is, to me, not just in how it will summon you towards movement, but also the many ways it does that summoning, the many eras and sonic landscapes it calls to in order to do that work.” – AUTHOR AND POET HANIF ABDURRAQIB ON NATURAL BROWN PROM QUEEN
Fresh from a sweaty run of UK festival appearances at All Points East, FORWARDS, End of the Road and more, Sudan Archives shares OMG BRITT and the song’s official video. The new single is the fourth and final taste of her highly anticipated second album Natural Brown Prom Queen out tomorrow, Friday 9 September via Stones Throw.
On OMG BRITT, Sudan effortlessly flows over a trap-indebted production that grows increasingly complex as the song progresses, an effect emphasised by the futuristic and claustrophobic video by Zach Sulak. The song was produced by Sudan Archives, JD Reid (slowthai, Mabel, Ghetts), Ben Dickey and Simon on the Moon.

Natural Brown Prom Queen is an epic record that is also her most personal, taking in race, womanhood, and the fiercely loyal, loving relationships at the heart of Sudan’s life with her family, friends, and partner.
When Sudan burst onto the scene in 2017 with Come Meh Way, she was a violinist and loop maker producing beats in her bedroom. While her debut album Athena drew inspiration from divine Black feminine power, on Natural Brown Prom Queen Sudan is in character as Britt, the girl next door from Cincinnati who drives around the city with the top down and shows up to high-school prom in a pink furry bikini with her thong hanging out her denim skirt.
From first listen, it’s immediately apparent that Natural Brown Prom Queen is Sudan’s most ambitious work to date, spanning 18 tracks and nearly an hour of music – from the disco-influenced R&B of Home Maker to Afrocentric anthem Selfish Soul, hip-hop banger OMG Britt, the wild ride of NBPQ (Topless) and the ballad Homesick (Gorgeous & Arrogant). Fittingly for an album named for a homecoming event, Natural Brown Prom Queen is all about home: both Sudan’s adopted hometown of L.A. and Cincinnati, where she was raised. It’s intimate in all senses of the word, with Sudan unafraid to be vulnerable, tender and open about her insecurities. But the record is also about finding pleasure – after all, this is the artist who played violin upside-down on a pole in a music video. On Natural Brown Prom Queen, Sudan Archives invites you to join in and embrace shared joy.
The lead-up to Natural Brown Prom Queen has made for a monumental summer for Sudan, including being named as a member of YouTube Music’s Foundry Class of 2022 (alongside the likes of Babytron, Obongjayar, and Genesis Owusu), guesting on Hrishikesh Hirway’s Song Exploder podcast for a deep dive into the writing and recording of Selfish Soul, and receiving glowing write-ups from Vulture, Billboard, Pitchfork, SPIN, AV Club, Hypebeast, and many more.
Following the album’s release, Sudan will embark on her Homecoming Tour in North America, the UK and Europe, her first headline run since the tour for her 2019 album Athena. Tickets are on sale now – full dates below.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
