The incredible depth of musical talent from young women around Australia has been captured once again with the release of the latest BIG SKY GIRLS compilation album – out August 24.

Now in its third year, BIG SKY GIRLS is a unique mentoring program that aims to promote and support young women in music.

Each year since 2017, 10 to 12 young women from regional and remote communities have travelled to Brisbane to take part in songwriting, recording and music mentoring.

To date over 30 young women have taken part of the program including artists such as Tia Gostelow, Doolie, Ruby Gilbert, Asha Jeffries, Tylah Winyard, Oh Harlow, Ella Hartwig and many more who have gone on to national recognition.

In previous years the project focussed on Queensland artists, but in 2020 opened the opportunity nationally with artists from New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Victoria also taking part and featured on the BIG SKY GIRLS Volume 2 release.

The program is an initiative started by Deb Suckling and Craig Spannfrom SUGARRUSH Music in Brisbane and supported by APRA AMCOS, The Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Queensland and Virgin Australia.

How does one sum up the extraordinary journey of 12 young women from across regional and remote parts of Australia in just one page? Founder and project manager Deb suckling explains:

“I could speak of the enormous courage of the 12 young women who made this album… who all travelled to Brisbane to my home to be a part of the third year of the BIG SKY GIRLS mentoring program. Who threw themselves into this with all their hearts and souls and created a network of lifelong friendships and support.”

“I could speak of the sheer joy upon their faces recording their songs, most of whom have never ever recorded before. I could speak of their enormous talent, their dedication to expression. But I actually don’t need to. This album says it all itself. BSG volume two is a collection of some of the most amazing songs I have heard, performed by young women who need support to pursue their careers in music. What we need now from you is your ears.”

“These are stories, songs covering just about every genre from 12 extraordinary young women. All who jumped on planes and in cars to come and learn and write and then make an album together. These are the new voices of our country.”

Engineered by Jeff Lovejoy, mastered by Paul Blakey and produced by Jeff and Deb earlier this year – the album features 12 tracks covering almost every genre showing the extreme diversity of these young women.

The process is supported by a team of mentors including award winning songwriters and musicians Shellie Morris, Roz Pappalardo, Andrea Kirwin, Yani Mills, Jackie Marshall, Jimi Laubscher, Brendan Watterson, Geoff Green, Francesca De Valence, Sam Buckingham, Tyrone Noonan and industry including Mardi Caught, Leonie Yeoman, Liz Archer and more.
