Tasmanian electronic duo Sumner return with their captivating new single, ‘Starlight’, ahead of releasing their Retrograde EP on Fri 14 Feb and embarking on their debut headline tour, kicking off the same day.
Recorded at Frying Pan studios, located within Mona Museum in Hobart, ‘Starlight’ is a shimmering exploration of the moment lust blooms into love. The track is drenched in mesmerising synths and heartfelt lyricism, with the quintessential love song marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Sumner leading into the release of their Retrograde EP. Radiating both emotional depth and sonic sophistication, ‘Starlight’ invites listeners to lose themselves in its intoxicating glow.
The duo explain, “Starlight is all about the feeling of realising that lust is turning into love, being transfixed and mesmerised by a person so much that they occupy every corner of your mind. We love writing love songs, and this one feels like a quintessential Sumner love song record. It marks a new era of Sumner ahead of the release of our upcoming EP, with our sound maturing and evolving just as we have as people.”
Produced and directed by Sumner and Lusy Productions, the music video for ‘Starlight’ showcases the gorgeous landscapes of their home state of Tasmania, from rugged terrain to snow-capped mountains and the wilds of the wilderness, perfectly encapsulating the essence of the song and its vast, lush soundscapes.
Hailing from the native woodlands of lutruwita country (Launceston, Tasmania), Sumner’s Chloe Wilson and Jack McLaine explore themes of power, intimacy and isolation with earnest and unique perspectives from the cold climate and environment they hail from.
Sumner caught the attention of the music world in 2018, releasing their debut EP ‘All That I Am’, with subsequent singles ‘Pictures’, ‘45 Roses’ and ‘Put It Out’ receiving airplay on triple j and triple j Unearthed. Shortly after, Sumner were awarded the Josh Pyke Partnership Grant and selected to showcase at both BIGSOUND and EMC.
An intense period of hibernation, reflection and creative expansion followed which allowed the project to grow. This resulted in their 2021 single ‘Stranded’, co-written and produced by Nick Littlemore and Peter Mayes (PNAU, Empire of the Sun). The incredibly striking music video for ‘Stranded’ was filmed on the west coast of lutruwita / Tasmania on a disused airport base beneath looming mountain ranges, as the sun set and their stunning sounds reverberated across the empty airstrip. Receiving full airplay on triple j and setting the tone for the next stage of Sumner, ‘Stranded’ was the first in a string of singles co-written and produced by PNAU, including ‘South’, ‘Good Light’ and ‘Desire’, all released on Lab78, a label founded by PNAU and etcetc.
Having since racked up over 8.5 million streams on Spotify, Sumner have gone on to collaborate and tour with Holy Holy on their song ‘Ready’, play a massive national tour with Empire of the Sun, support PNAU, Boo Seeka, Vera Blue, Montaigne and Slowly Slowly, as well as perform at festivals like Falls, Portside Festival and Great Escape Festival (TAS).
Now, Sumner are preparing to perform at Party In The Paddock (TAS) in February, followed by the release of their much anticipated EP, Retrograde, on Fri 14 Feb. Plus they’ll be hitting the road in Feb-March for their first ever headline tour in Australia. With their signature blend of intricate electronic production, heartfelt songwriting, and raw live energy, Sumner are set to captivate audiences in an intimate and unforgettable series of performances in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart and Launceston to celebrate the release. AMNPLIFY – DB

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
