Get ready to wind the windows down and feel the warm coastal breeze, as Sunny Luwe (pronounced ‘loo’) grooves onto the scene with her newest track ‘Fly Like A Bird’. Fresh off a recent name change, Gold Coast (Kombumerri Country) based First Nations artist Sunny Luwe, previously Dani Teveluwe, returns to road trip playlists everywhere on March 24 with this synth-y summer dream.

‘Fly Like A Bird’ takes inspiration from the rhythmic 60s and 70s, along with more contemporary 90s pop artists like Nelly Furtado, making it a fitting first track for Teveluwe’s new moniker, Sunny Luwe. Her signature positive vibes shine through, and the first listen instantly conjures up the nostalgic sensation of a coastal road trip, transporting listeners to a simpler time of great music and the ‘good old days’.

The track is the result of a co-writing experience with Grammy-nominated artist Sally Seltmann (Seeker Lover Keeper, New Buffalo), during which Sunny recalls feeling ‘overcome with gratitude’. This feeling of gratitude flows through the track, with Sunny’s adoration for the place she calls home – felt clearly in every note.

The transformation from Dani Teveluwe to Sunny Luwe was inspired by an encounter with a psychic, and reflects her love of sunshine, vintage fashion and classic music and sounds. The second part, Luwe, means ‘one who acts from intuition’, making Sunny Luwe the perfect moniker for this new, authentic chapter in her musical journey.

With the birth of Sunny Luwe, Dani also steps up into the role of custodian and role model, offsetting the carbon generated through the release of ‘Fly Like A Bird’ through donations to Queensland not-for-profit, Rainforest 4. Rainforest 4 is focused on buying back development blocks near the Daintree Rainforest in North Queensland, a project which represents the change Sunny wants to see in the world.

On why it was important to coincide this work with her new release, Sunny explains: “Over the past few years I have been working diligently at my career, however I felt I was denying my power to effect meaningful change. I wanted that to shift that in 2023, so I’m really embracing my responsibility to myself, others and the Earth by offsetting my musical projects. I also wanted this to be fun, and bringing Sunny Luwe into the world in this way felt very natural and fun, as well as a good platform to educate others around carbon offsetting.”

The music video for ‘Fly Like A Bird’, recorded by videographer Roan Sajko, also available March 24, and is the perfect visual accompaniment to the track. Featuring light-filled scenes of coastal living, the music video encapsulates the uplifting gratitude Luwe feels for her Australian home.

Receiving airplay for previous releases on the likes of Triple J, Double J, community radio all over Australia, and being named a local artist to watch by Tone Deaf, Sunny Luwe will continue to turn heads with her newest release. Sunny has also been revealed as an Indigenous Award Finalist for the 2023 Queensland Music Awards.

‘Fly Like A Bird’ will be uplifting spirits from March 24, ahead of Sunny Luwe’s upcoming album release in 2023.
