A birthday is a cause for celebration, and a time to reflect on the years that have passed. When Sweat It Out was founded, it was a platform to release and champion good music – starting with close friends, and soon after spreading to the wider music community. From the outset, standards were high and the music diverse, with the very first release of Gameboy/Gamegirl’s album ‘Golden Ghetto Sex’, and the second signing to the label, Killaqueenz with the anthemic single ‘Bitches’. To this day, regardless of experience, background or genre, to quote Ajax, it’s all about “shtick”. And to us, there was one track sitting in our music library collecting metaphorical dust, and now marking 10 years of Sweat It Out, we thought it time for this one to see the light of day. To the family, friends of Adrian “Ajax” Thomas, we hope you hear in this track what we have: his lively personality, his sense of humour, and most of all, pure unadulterated “shtick”.

Accompanying the release, is a full music video created from the classic cartoon of Ajax‘s alter ego – walking past an art gallery of each Sweat It Out release artwork, again highlighting the evolution of the label over the past decade. With the initial wolf sketch created by OG Sweat designer Billmund, responsible for the creation of the iconic Sweat shoes, we were delighted to have his team on board to create this piece with us. Animated by Katy Ross, and polished by Walt Disney animator, Nick Harrop, they have given the wolf the style and swagger reminiscent of our main man Ajax.

‘I’m Hot’ is taken from the wider release ‘Sweat It Out 2008 – 2018’, which is not only a celebration of the legacy of Ajax, but the successes the label has seen over the years. With side A focusing on the Dance Legend himself, the full release features 16 tracks carefully picked from a very Sweaty catalogue of over 217 releases to date. From iconic moments like the first release, to office favourites, and the first couple of acts to break-out globally, it is both a momentous and meaningful summary of what has been achieved. And furthermore, we look forward to another 10 years of celebrating great music and great people, in loving memory of Ajax.

Ajax – one of the most renowned, respected, loved, and influential DJs of the Australian dance community. From his legendary skills behind the decks, to his genuine enthusiasm and unwavering motivation to mentor budding musicians, and pure innovative genius, Ajax will forever be remembered as Dance Legend. 10 years on from the birth of Sweat It Out as a bedroom label, with the wicked debut release of the Gameboy / Gamegirl album ‘Golden Ghetto Sex’, there is so much to celebrate and to be grateful for, in his legacy.

BUY/STREAM: SWEAT IT OUT 2008 – 2018

With a total of 217 releases from 2008 to present, we celebrate with a 12 track vinyl of Jaxy’s greatest accomplishments, and stand-out moments for the label. For those who were lucky enough to have been influenced by the Dance Legend himself, SIDE A (Jax Trax) is for you. Opening with an unreleased Ajax record, ‘I’m Hot’ is a time warp straight back to the height of the electro era, with the single being the perfect summation of Ajax’s spirit, and sense of humour. With additional remixes of Midnight Juggernauts and Northbrook, and finally ‘Back Of My Car’– a release from the self-titled “D-List supergroup” Twinsy – Ajax’s collaboration with Guy Chappell & Michael Belsar.

There was only ever one way to kick off SIDE B – the lead single from Sweat’s first ever signing Gameboy / Gamegirl with ‘Sweaty Wet / Dirty Damp’, the official SWEATDS001! The release clearly setting the standard for years of success on the start-up label. Next up, Sweat’s first international signing Monkey Safari with ‘Those Dancing Days’, and still one of the office favourites to this day! Danny T, now label manager of Club Sweat, first became part of the Sweat It Out family way back in 2011 with the signing of the first EP, ‘Mean Baby’ – again, still such a jam! And a blast from the past – the debut release from two young Northern Beaches kids, What So Not with ‘7 Dollar Bill’.

And one could not talk about the successes of Sweat It Out, without talking about RÜFÜS (now RÜFÜS DU SOL). ‘Take Me’ in particular was special, as it was the debut release from the debut album ‘Atlas’ which went platinum in Australia, and happened to be the last promo spiel or “shpeel” written by Ajax (which you can read in full in the vinyl booklet). Parachute Youth, ‘Can’t Get Better Than This’ became the second local signing to make waves internationally, taking the baton from ‘We Speak No Americano’ (a bona fide #1 international hit), and established the label as a hotbed for local talent to take on the world. Again, it would not be a Sweat release, without Yolanda Be Cool, teaming up with DCUP producing hit after hit, choosing ‘Soul Makossa (Money)’ for the vinyl because it’s still an absolute floor filler. And lastly, ‘Grand Rapids’ by Indian Summer – one of the duo’s first releases from 2013 which saw them get huge support across triple j and the club world.

The last vinyl side, is a look at the more recent releases of Sweat It Out – artists that we are so proud to be working with today. Crooked Colours‘ first release ‘Come Down’ now has over 2.5 million streams, with the trio taking to new heights with the release of their debut album ‘Vera just last year. ‘Define’ was the instant classic via the team up of Dom Dolla & Go Freek, holding #1 on the ARIA Club Chart for 9 consecutive weeks, becoming a global club weapon. With a mixture of club and radio grand slams including a recent gold record, Motez joined the fam back in 2014 with the release of ‘Promise Me’ – a track that has truly stood the test of time! Finishing off with What So Not’s ‘Jaguar’ – a track that was so unique and forward thinking for it’s time, that it is no surprise that both artists have gone on to have such phenomenal careers.

Ajax, this one’s for you. Here’s to another 10 years.

Much love,
Team Sweat.
