Sydney multi-instrumentalist Jess Spahr delivers a wonderful contradiction in new single Betray Me, weaving dark tales of betrayal and deception around ethereal, dreamy pop soundscapes.
Selling out her debut show in Sydney last year and recently announced to support Canadian roots rocker, Terra Lightfoot, Jess is ready to bring her new music to an even bigger audience with her single launch set to take over Django Bar, Thursday 19 April.
“My music is a chronicle of my man dramas,” laughs Jess, “I have a knack for falling in love with the wrong people who turn out to be a bit toxic and while I could certainly do without the personal pain, it does provide great fodder for music I’ve discovered!
“Betray Me is designed to reflect that journey of being seduced and lulled into a false sense of security using atmospheric vocals, meditative piano and laid-back reverb, but the lyrics really dance in contrast with darker themes of betrayal and deception. The truth.”
Remarkably, Jess has kept her sense of humour, delivering light banter between songs and is determined to channel her experiences into her new music career.
“A lot of feelings and emotions went into this music,” she said, “It is a very cathartic way of dealing with the drama. And the shows are just so much fun. I get to play this emotive music but reveal my positive, bubbly personality in between songs. I think people are surprised!”
Influenced by Morcheeba, London Grammar and Evanescence, Jess inspires confidence with her contemporary dreamy pop music and a show that engages, uplifts and entertains with her band and disarming banter.
Jess Spahr launches her new single, Betray Me, at Django Bar on Thursday, 19 April. Tickets on sale now. Betray Me is available through all digital outlets 13 April.
