Sydney-based metalcore group Synge have today returned with a colossal new cut ‘Soma’ – produced and mixed by Mark Williamson (Inertia, Far Away Stables, A Swift Farewell).

‘Soma’ is a lethal explosion of angst and ferocity, piloted by thunderous vocals and vehement instrumentation. Intricate technicalities riddle the arrangement with flexibility and zeal, as clean melodies provide temporary relief during the ominous hook.

Alongside the song is the psychotropic accompanying video – filmed and directed by Colin Jeffs (Yours Truly, Jesswar, Diamond Construct). Featuring distorted quick-cuts, kaleidoscopic lighting and foreboding aesthetics, the performance video radiantly encapsulates the song’s gloomy sentiment.

The band talks about the meaning behind ‘Soma’:

“Loosely based on the arguments proposed by Aldous Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’ (about the brutal truth of miracle happy drugs i.e., Soma), we dive into the deep end of terrible neural chemistry and our response adopts the form of an internal soliloquy, one that is defiant to succumb to our own afflictions. We implore everyone to understand that everybody has their struggles, every single person. These are ours.”

‘Soma’ is taken from Synge’s upcoming debut EP ‘Vacant Minded’, which will be available worldwide on Friday, May 27. The EP includes debut single ‘Refract’, which was supported by the likes of Spotify, triple j Unearthed, Triple M Hard N Heavy and 4ZZZ. It also saw praise from Hysteria Magazine, AAA Backstage, Something You Said and Milky.

Since their inception, Synge have traversed the East-Coast of Australia, playing in bars, emo-night parties, and all ages events. They have previously shared the stage with local heavyweights Isotopes, Days of Deceit, Inertia and Bloom.
