Sydney-based metalcore group Synge have just revealed their titanic debut single ‘Refract’ – produced and mixed by Mark Williamson (Inertia, Far Away Stables, Closure), with drums engineered by Chris Blancato (Northlane, Arteries, Bare Bones).

‘Refract’ begins with a prolonged crescendo before launching into a full-scale assault of melodic guitars, progressive bass and syncopated drums, before the abraded vocals of frontman Ethan Davies intensify the song’s penetrating mix. Drops in dynamics pave the way for calmer harmonies before an increase in pace hurtles the track towards a colossal chorus, resonant with lyrics that reflect an internal monologue amidst a cacophony of viscous instrumentation.

Synge talk about the themes behind ‘Refract’: “’Refract’ is centred around the progressive dichotomy of a person’s hatred, from extrospective to introspective. ‘Refract’ is almost a form of dialogue between ourselves, ‘I’, and the world in which we are situated, ‘you’. It is an existential and emotional piece, where the world around us generates a sense of futile anger so much so that we redirect that to ourselves. In exploring this journey, frustration prevails and a fragile yet tragic closure is reached.”

Synge consists of high-school friends Ethan Davies, Dimitri Tsopanian, Ben Briddon and James Merkouris. Taking cues from a magnitude of metal influences such as Thornhill and Architects, their music abounds with vigorous energy and passion, while their lyrical subjects are all-inclusive and embracing of persistent mental and physical conditions.

Since their inception, the group have traversed the East-Coast of Australia, playing in bars, emo-night parties, and all ages events. They have previously shared the stage with local heavyweights Isotopes, Days of Deceit, Inertia and Bloom.
