“‘Ten Songs’ is a gorgeous infusion of sweet yearnings wrapped in a magical and mystical cloak. Bowers’s gentle musings are evocative and thrilling: the sounds crystalline, delicate and yet antithetically draped over a steely spine. This is an album full of an inherent grace, poised and shimmering.”   Backseat Mafia – 8.7/10

The album ‘Ten Songs‘ is a return to songwriting for Tania Bowers (via Tania). Taking up with T. Wilds as the moniker, the Blue Mountains artist is more of a poet or writer than a musician.  The songs on her new album were created with simplicity in mind and recorded in a straightforward manner by Matt Toohey in a home studio in Katoomba.

Some songs have full instrumentation, and many have simple guitars and vocal arrangement. Originally set out to be demos, Tania decided to release the recordings, as they hold the essence of what she wanted the effortlessly named ‘Ten Songs‘ album to be.

Featuring singles I Swim, Curious Moon & Wounded Knees, Ten Songs is out on October 1, 2021 through Cheersquad Records & Tapes and is available on CD, limited edition translucent red 180gr vinyl, black 180gr vinyl and digital.

About T.WILDS

The impact of T. Wilds’ voice is immediate and definitive. Distinctive, delicate yet powerful, and instantly captivating. Her voice provides the perfect vehicle for her ever-expanding catalogue of songs that are wise and curious, daydreamy and evocative. She is influenced by the beauty of her surroundings and the natural world.

Landing somewhere between the sophisticated soul of Sade, the wistful yearning of Nico, and the country-tinged soul of Gillian Welch, her music continues to evolve into its own genre of delicate indie-folk.  Her stripped-back live performances have seen her impress audiences in support slots for the likes of Cat Power, Wil Oldham, The Books, Kristin Hersch, My Brightest Diamond, Clare Bowditch, and many others.

Previously her inclination to collaborate has seen her work alongside international artists such as Howe Gelb, Tortoise members, and Prefuse 73, but these days she crafts her recordings with fellow Blue Mountains resident Matt Toohey, who adds light and shade with minimal electric guitar atmospherics to accompany the classic simplicity of her acoustic guitar.

TEN SONGS
track x track:

With You
– A song about escaping it all and spending time appreciating the little things. “We could sing into the sky and on the surface of your skin I’d see the light sink into you”. Originally a simple demo, Anna West accompanies with cello, with Maizy Coombes on violin.

Curious Moon
– When I was writing ‘Curious Moon’ in my kitchen one day, I knew it would be a special song. I was imagining two people on an adventure escaping from reality to a dream-like Donnie Darko film and soundscape

Wounded Knees
– Is a gothic fairytale with question-and-answer-like lyrics about trust and devotion.

Goodbye
– This song is an imaginary tale of possible Bonnie and Clyde duo, that camaraderie that exists in outlaw and adventure.

I Swim
– The first single, this song was written around the idea of cycles of inspiration and depression ‘sometimes I get lost to you but this time I made it back to you’ – not talking to another person but oneself.

Say It
– Say it is a simple song about (old) love, trying to ask a question about where one stands after the journey is no longer a new one.

June
– This song was written after a few years of not songwriting at all. And it’s not like it broke the drought, there was, another few years after that of no songs either. So this is the ‘island‘ song. It’s about keeping on going, moving through stagnant moments, ruts, life anchors to get to another place.

St Cecilia
– St Cecilia is about a creative drought. Life logistics like jobs and raising a family make it much harder to be creative or take creativity seriously, more than a hobby, and the part of growing up Catholic that I enjoyed was the cult-like collecting of Saint cards, I knew them all at one point. St Cecilia is the patron saint of the arts, so it’s about her sleeping or waking over us.

What to do
– Definitely thinking about vintage songwriting here, writing a song about dilemmas. Nothing too heavy here, a ‘tune’ of simplicity.

Wind in the Valley
– Music by Matt Toohey. I took Matt’s music and tried melodies over the top and one worked. I don’t often collaborate but at this point, Matt and I had been spending many weekends over a couple of years getting together. I was trying to evoke vast mountain imagery.
