Telenova thrive in their exploration of widescreen music; cinematic in scope and ambitious in design. New single Teardrop is a bold arrival for the three-piece, a poetic statement of intent for the year ahead.

An urgent breakbeat engulfs the chilling sampled piano line on Teardrop, setting the scene for lead singer Angeline Armstrong’s tender, husky vocals to cut through. Teardrop embodies a wrestling of light and dark, the tension between our good intentions and our mistakes – an ever present theme for those familiar with the world Telenova have begun building in their fledgling days as a young band.

‘We wanted to capture the volatile nature of our ever-changing human emotions in this song. I have this innate longing and hope for stability and joy, but in tension to that, often find myself doing and saying things I don’t mean to say or feel. Josh and I were interested in exploring that tension in the lyrics, how sometimes even the journey towards happiness and light can be tinged with a sadness or darkness, ‘a teardrop on the sunshine’ – Angeline

Typically sleek and fuelled by warm influences of Bristol trip-hop and NYC boom-bap, Teardrop is accompanied by a captivating visual saturated with symbolism and allegory, imagined and directed by Angeline, alongside Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore (Courtney Barnett, Hiatus Kaiyote).

“As a filmmaker I tend to see the colours and imagery of all our songs quite vividly in the songwriting process. I wanted the ‘Teardrop’ video to have a mythical feel to it, establishing a bit of a mythology as the first part in a triptych of Telenova videos exploring this tension of light and dark within us…Drawn to the transcendent nature of light in romantic era paintings, like John Martin and J.M.W Turner, I wanted to capture this divine longing through the interplay of chasing after an elusive light. The set was inspired by still life paintings to contrast this ‘transcendence’ with representations of the ephemeral and temporal nature of human life. Bringing on Claudia to co-direct resulted in a flurry of beautiful chaos on set as we tried to make every frame feel like a romantic painting in and of itself.” – Angeline

Teardrop also marks Telenova’s first release via a worldwide deal with EMI Records, and a partnership with Fiction Records in the UK and Europe. This alliance follows their first major run through Europe in 2023, playing headline shows in London, Paris, Athens, Berlin and Hamburg’s Reeperbahn Festival, performing live on Athens’ primetime national radio station En Lefko, in addition to supporting RUEL on his European tour. As a homecoming, Telenova capped the year off with an indelible set at the revered Meredith Music Festival in Victoria.

To mark the release of Teardrop, Telenova embark on a national Australian tour, it’s first in a year, plus an appearance at Athen’s biggest music festival Release in June.

About TELENOVA

A tapestry of dark romanticism, slick musicianship and vivid aesthetics have fuelled the Melbourne outfit since their debut EP Tranquilize in 2021. Powered by the ubiquitous lead single Bones, plus the sweeping sonics of follow up EP Stained Glass Love,  Telenova have been passionately embraced at home and abroad, thanks to support from BBC6, KCRW, Vogue Paris, NME and more.
