Following on from a successful 2020 campaign, Melbourne indie-pop outfit Telescreen are back with their punchy new single ‘Onward (To You)’ – out Thursday 26th August. ‘Onward (To You)’ is a culmination of tasty production from lead singer and guitarist Nic Schwarz and the mixing prowess of Sam Swain (Rat!hammock, Josh Cashman, Tamara & The Dreams). Wrapped up into a bright and beaming indie-pop jangle, this new track from Telescreen is the band’s outright favourite to date.

Written in the depths of Melbourne’s second extended lockdown of 2020, ‘Onward (To You)’ was exorcised from a pivotal and personal turning point for Nic, the band’s frontman. Having endured through a personal low point and making some really big life changes, Nic was beginning to emerge out the otherside with a new found excitement for the future. He began wishing he could fast forward the next few years of his life, anxious to see where time would lead him. The anticipation led him to become quite fixated on the idea that his future self was watching over him, guiding his decisions and directing him towards the right path for his life. He had an overwhelming feeling that all he had to do was be true to himself and he would end up where he needed to be.

“This song is a reflection of that sincere, starry-eyed hope” Nic explains. “It’s got this real sense of belief and optimism about it that fills me with desperate anticipation for what could be next. Similarly the track itself builds and builds throughout the song, all leading up to that final moment of blissful release and the feeling of “I’m gonna make it”. Onward reminds me that time is constantly moving us toward our next big break, our next lover, turning us into the person we want and need to be.”

Despite the challenges the industry and the band have faced over the last 18 months, 2020 saw some significant highlights for Telescreen. After releasing ‘Moving On’ the follow up single from the band’s debut EP, the band found themselves winners of Triple J Unearthed’s NIDA competition, included in Spotify’s Fresh Finds of 2020 playlist, debut at #1 on the Triple J Unearthed charts and in new territory, receiving significant international editorial success.

This follows on from the band’s breakout year in 2019 which saw the release of Telescreen’s lead single and title track from their debut EP, ‘Growing Pain’s’ feature on popular UK blog Scientists of Sound boosting the track to #1 on the global Hype Machine charts, notch up over 15k plays in less than 48 hours. It was also a mammoth year on stage as Telescreen played some of their largest shows to date. The five-piece shared stages with the likes of Mosquito Coast, STUMPS, DIET., Francesca Gonzalez, Creature Fear and The Attics as well as selling out their biggest headliners and playing their first ever festival appearances.
