“It’s what a hot summer sounds like: everything drenched in the orange of the sun as you sit on a stoop blasting music through a speaker with friends — irresistible stuff!” – THE NEW YORK TIMES

“You can hear Nashville’s influence on the artist’s sound as he inspires sadness as quickly as he spits bars.” – MTV NEWS

“Playing out like a deeply personal farewell note, the Nashville-based artist is dexterous, switching effortlessly between rapping and crooning over the song’s country-inspired production.” – THE FADER

“An artist who has immediately won over our attention” – PIGEONS AND PLANES

Nashville-based singer, songwriter, producer and rapper Terry Presume releases his new project ‘What Box?’ today via September Recordings. Alongside, he shares the collection’s third and final single, ‘Act Up’. It follows previous singles ‘ZaZa and Some Runtz (Smoke Break)’ and ‘None Of This Alone’.

Positioning Terry as one of the most exciting artists out right now, the ‘What Box?’ project houses a collection of songs that are unrestricted by genres and showcase his undeniable ability to master any sonic domain and make it completely his own. Terry explores deeply universal emotions and pushes up against social norms with an impact that forges new spaces for people who don’t quite fit into existing molds. The result is extraordinary.

Terry says about the release, “Never allow yourself to be repressed by any societal borders, whether that be emotions, thought patterns, way of life or anything that intrigues you that may be deemed abnormal for your “standard”. Escaping the limiting stereotypes this world has provided is what What Box? embodies.”

‘ACT UP’ IS OUT NOW

Born in South Florida and raised in a neighbourhood called Golden Gate by a Haitian single mother, Terry has overcome more than most with music providing a source of survival and healing. He grew up surrounded by Haitian Kompa music that his mother played for him and the sounds of 50 Cent, Eminem and classic R&B that lined his community. At just 8 years old and a deeply shy kid, Terry wrote his first poem, and by the age of 11 he taught himself to write and produce music – both of which he excelled in and used as a medium to navigate the different cultures and worlds that he straddled.

Following a tumultuous escape to Los Angeles with nothing but a dream of “success” and $200 in his pocket, he ultimately doubled down on his music and his own sense of self, resulting in a body of work that is led by his emotions and lived experiences – not genres. Terry bares every facet of himself with an unquantifiable depth and gratitude, honouring his pain, sorrow, heartbreak and newfound enlightenment, unlike what is often seen in music today.
