To celebrate the album’s release, The Beautiful Girls will be hitting the road throughout Jan and Feb 2024 – treating longtime fans to the world-famous live show that has seen the collective perform globally for nearly two decades. Playing in venues across Kingsliff, Perth, Manly and more, the upcoming tour promises to be a special moment in history for the band, with their debut album ‘Learn Yourself’ also celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Recent album cut ‘Periscopes’ holds a special place in the hearts of The Beautiful Girls as it was the first song from their debut album, representing their musical journey from the beginning. Mat McHugh, the band’s frontman, stated, “There’s been a whole lot of life between these two moments, and you can hear it,” reflecting on the growth and evolution of their music.

Mat McHugh further emphasised the importance of their live performances, saying, “The Beautiful Girls have built our reputation around being the best live band we could be.” Their dedication to honouring the music of the moment has resulted in a live album that promises to bring joy to their fans, just as much as creating it brought them joy.

With an impressive track record of over 500,000 albums sold and 100,000,000 streams, both independently released, Mat McHugh and The Beautiful Girls have firmly ingrained themselves in the Australian music scene. McHugh’s unique blend of bass-heavy rhythms, dub, folk, soul, jazz, and hip-hop has captivated audiences since his early days of guerilla shows at a local skate park.

About THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS

What’s in a name? South Carolina singer-songwriter Sam Beam launched his international career under the “band name” Iron & Wine, while fresh out of Perth – writer and producer, Kevin Parker has conquered the world in his guise as Tame Impala. Similarly, over on the East Coast, fellow Australian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mat McHugh is and always has been The Beautiful Girls, though for some reason, that fact seems to have often proven oddly elusive to both fans and media alike.

“Even from the early days when it all started it was a toss of a coin whether the project would be under my name or something else,” recalls McHugh. “I’d just come back from overseas in 2001 and the earliest incarnation of the songs were completely four-tracked. Those tapes ended up in the hands of a couple of friends who agreed to come and play shows with me. That was the beginning of The Beautiful Girls.”

From its inception, McHugh always operated The Beautiful Girls as a “collective” rather than a “band”, a project in which various players came and went depending on what the music he was writing at the time required. McHugh’s music was obviously a “mash-up” that struck a chord not only in Australia but internationally. Two years after the debut EP, The Beautiful Girls were touring Japan, Canada and the US.

Sophomore album, ‘We’re Already Gone’ reached #19 on the ARIA Album Chart, was nominated for an ARIA award, a Triple J ‘J Award’ and scored a coveted spot on Richard Kingsmill’s top 10 albums of the year. Julia Stone was another guest vocalist on the album.

Third album ‘Ziggurats’, released in 2007, reached #21 on the ARIA chart and included ‘I Thought About You’, which was nominated in the 2008 APRA Music Awards in the Blues & Roots Work of the Year category. The Beautiful Girls continued playing stages across Japan, the UK, Europe, Brazil, the US and Canada as well as Australia. By 2010 The Beautiful Girls could look back on a dozen world tours in just eight years, no mean feat for any act but particularly impressive when you consider McHugh was doing it all independently – not a single major label or corporate sponsorship in sight!

In the past decade, every song sung, every note played, every beat struck on a Beautiful Girls record has all been down to Mat McHugh. So, what’s in a name? Mat McHugh was, is and always has been The Beautiful Girls and there’s a lot more extraordinary music yet to come from the man behind the name.
