Kila is the fourth brand new song unveiled by The Cat Empire for 2018 as the band steadily build toward the release of their next studio album.
With it’s insistent bass line and solid gold Cuban groove that gives way to another uplifting chorus refrain, Kila, like much of the band’s most beloved work, is a life-affirming dance party threatening to happen. Written by Felix Riebl and recorded on the outskirts of Melbourne with the band’s long-time producer of choice Jan Skubiszewski, Kila again highlights The Cat Empire in full flight as they manage to bottle their ferocious live energy into this inspired take, another highpoint amongst the many highlights of the band’s forthcoming album release.
As the song’s author Felix Riebl explains, “Kila is one of those songs you write and know that an album will be built around it. It follows on from songs by The Cat Empire like ‘Brighter than Gold’ and ‘Steal the Light,’ which both have dark verses and anthemic choruses, perfect for a festival. Lyrically I wanted to write something edgy, joyful, mysterious, where people might mistake the words and that be a good thing. Kill a man Jaro – Kilimanjaro.”
Following the success internationally at radio with previous tracks Ready Now and La Sirène, Kila is the next official radio single for 2018. With its monster chorus and contagious rhythm the song will no doubt further galvanise The Cat Empire’s global fanbase as they feverishly await delivery of the band’s next full-length album. In the meantime fans hungry for fresh material have generated 1.4 million streams and close to 100,000 YouTube views off the back of the songs Ready Now, Stolen Diamonds and La Sirène, a number set to climb in coming months.
The cover art for Kila features the work of Melbourne-based photographer Marcelle Bradbeer. Bradbeer focuses on capturing man-altered landscapes in rural environments. Lucky No. 7 (Queenstown) was taken in 2018 when Bradbeer was visiting rural areas of Tasmania that had been visually disrupted by human impact. The work is part of Bradbeer’s current series THE DIVINE DIVIDE: the ideological construct of landscape and challenging early landscape photography that portrays nature as a sublime otherness seemingly beyond human reach.
Having just completed a sold out Australian tour that The Sydney Morning Herald in a 4.5 star review proclaimed to be “a perfect demonstration of their musical brilliance,” the band are taking a brief pit stop before heading back to Europe for a headline run which includes two sold out nights at The Roundhouse in London, a first for any Australian band, ever! The band also perform multiple nights in Amsterdam, Bristol, Madrid and Barcelona, before heading back home to play their final dates for the year in Bathurst and Western Australia. 2019 is set to continue to see more live action from the band with a huge 20 date tour throughout Canada and the U.S. in March just announced.
