Brisbane/Meanjin-based punk/alt-rock darlings, The Dandys, are announcing the release of their debut EP with their new single, ‘Gums’ (out Friday, August 11). Following the success of their hard-hitting anthem ‘Smile More’ and their appearance at Splendour In The Grass, The Dandys continue to make waves with their fierce energy and unapologetic approach as they approach the release of their debut EP ‘Sex and Feuds’ on September 15.
With just four single releases under their belt, The Dandys have already captured the nation’s attention, earning praise for their electrifying live performances and bold musicality. Having supported artists like Hope D, WAAX, Asha Jefferies, The Grogans, Peach Fur, Adam Newling and The Dreggs, and graced renowned festivals like Splendour, Mountain Goat Valley Crawl, and Jungle Love, the band’s reputation as an emerging force is undeniable.
The Dandy’s debut EP, ‘Sex and Feuds’, offers an authentic and unfiltered exploration of the turbulent journey of adolescence. Overflowing with attitude and vibrant energy, the EP perfectly captures both the exuberance of youth and the unrestrained enthusiasm of a budding musical group discovering their unique sound. Mads Protheroe states: “Sex and Feuds is basically all about growing up and learning how to respond to all the things life inevitably throws your way. As always, you can expect some unapologetic tongue in cheek songwriting, plenty of attitude and a whole lot of energy. In saying that, there’s also some really vulnerable tracks on the record that we’re really excited to share. As a whole though, it’s a snapshot of our first year as a band. It’s what we felt and experienced and we hope it makes you feel something too.”

Offering up another taste of their debut EP, ‘Gums’ has The Dandys on a high-dynamic rollercoaster ride that was seen to be a crowd favourite at their recent performance at Splendour. The slow-burning verses allow Protheroe’s powerful vocal delivery to articulate every word while the band struts along with cool and calm energy, providing a grungy, blues-rock backdrop. As the tempo picks up, the pre-chorus plunges into the deep before exploding into an emancipating instrumental chorus adorned with a euphoric psychedelic guitar riff. The song’s bridge and outro drive forward with a fuzz-driven intensity, leaving those listening in a dizzying wake.
In Protheroe’s own words, “‘Gums’ is about releasing the pressure. We all know growing up is overwhelming, so is booking dental checkups and managing your chronic iron deficiency. It’s about the mindset of wanting self-improvement but lacking the motivation or desire to do the mundane. Mostly though, ‘Gums’ is a track that gives you permission to take that pressure off and have a good time. It’s not really that deep.”
As with their previous releases, The Dandys expertly blend catchy melodies with profound messaging in ‘Gums’. The song serves as a liberating anthem, urging listeners to let go of life’s burdens and enjoy the moment. Its unapologetic spirit reflects the band’s fearless approach to addressing pressing issues through their art.
The Dandys’ previous releases have received praise from Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, Hysteria Mag, Music Feeds, Scenestr, AAA Backstage, MILKY, Livewire AU, and idobi Anthem (US), alongside extensive airplay on community radio stations across Australia.
This whirlwind of a single from The Dandys is out now and will be followed by their debut EP ‘Sex and Feuds’ on September 15.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
