‘CATCH THAT TRAIN’

Catch That Train is the second single lifted from Canadian Americana collective The Hello Darlins forthcoming debut album, Go by Feel, with the music video now available to view on YouTube and the alt country program on Foxtel’s CMT (Australia).

Catch That Train is about being faced with difficult decisions and changing the direction of your life. It’s about endings and new beginnings…maybe in a relationship, job, behaviour or belief. It’s about a kind of resolve when you know that things need to change, and pursuing a new way forward.

The music video imagery shows old medicines, retro carpet and bottles, representing a past way of doing things. The dominos represent change and, sometimes, destruction before you can start over.  The crystal ball and rose symbolise the future and unknown possibilities, and the artist represents the creation of a path forward, as it is designed and unveiled.

“I was fortunate to be raised in a family who valued art, creativity and celebrated music. My Grandfather was one of my greatest teachers and musical influences. His cultural roots stem from The Czech Kingdom, also known as The Kingdom of Bohemia (now Czechia),” explains Lacina. “I was born in Canada, but wanted to incorporate the spirit of Bohemian heritage into the video. ‘Bohemianism’, referring to an artistic, or “unconventional” lifestyle is something that many people relate to – especially musicians and creators. This is not the technical definition of a Bohemian person, but to me, the phrase reflects a sense of freedom…the essence of which, was creatively embraced by western society after the second world war. My grandfather spoke English, Czech and a bohemian dialect of Romani which is now extinct. He was a very artistic, spiritual, carefree, loving and inclusive person.  To me, he was what the Bohemian soul still is.”

The artist in the clip is Casey Davis, a professional drummer, tattoo artist and mixed media artist.  He has lived many places around the world but has called Calgary, Alberta home for over 30 years. Casey has a true “bohemian” spirit and is the maker and/or collector of 99% of the cool stuff in this video.

ABOUT

The concept of The Hello Darlins first took shape back in 2016, starting when Calgary-based vocalist/producer, Candace Lacina, and keyboardist/producer, Mike Little (known as MFL), crossed paths after first meeting at a recording studio six years earlier. They began making music together soon after the reunion, adding others from their musical circle whose combined resume encompasses working with Shania Twain, B.B. King, and the who’s who of Canadian country music.

“We write and play for a lot of great artists and we’ve always been IN the band. It’s fun to have a killer project with our friends – who also happen to be really incredible musicians,” says Mike. “As soon as things started coming together in the spring of 2019, we all felt that this was something special based on the songs and harmonies, and the authenticity of playing real instruments.”

Along with recording at their own studio in Calgary, The Hello Darlins have been laying down tracks with bandmate & co-producer, Murray Pulver (Crash Test Dummies, The Bros. Landreth), at Winnipeg’s Stereobus, and have teamed up multiple Grammy-winning engineer, Mike Poole (Robert Plant, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, John Prine, The Wood Brothers, ABC’s Nashville TV series) to create a unique mix that supports an organic production approach.

It all adds up to The Hello Darlins preferring to add the great “North” to the Americana genre, a more than symbolic gesture in keeping with their musical vision that will continue to be revealed ahead of the arrival of their full-length album, Go by Feel.
